(218 posts)My wife used a discount place to check my DNA. Turns out I'm half Irish and half German.
The problem is it's Irish Setter and German Shepard. I think she saved money by going to a pet ancestry company. . .

(15,237 posts)My Grandfather actually knew him before becoming a Roosevelt Democrat. My daughter who is into genealogy knows to never go there. My Grandfather knew Harry Truman and Clarence Cannon was teased about this unfortunate relationship.

(21,137 posts)When I was a young kid, Dad would always say, dirty, stinkin, lousy republicans! To this day I can hear him say it in my memories of him!

(9,888 posts)were dyed in the wool Repubs. Hated FDR with a purple passion. Things were different then. Both grew up fairly poor, but were solidly middle class by WW2 and beyond. That was back when you didnt need a college degree to get a decent job that fed the family and allowed for some extras. Actually, they were both prime examples of what no longer happens - solid guys with solid jobs that paid a living wage. A house, a car, couple of kids, a decent standard of living.

(1,850 posts)My Canadian mom was a Democratic socialist, and my dad converted to republican as a young man, before they married.
Dad was looking for work, went to a legislator who told my dad he could help him if dad was a repug. So he became one, which fit, because he was racist, selfish, mean, and crazy. Didn't help me pay for college, but helped Regan and Bush1 with their election campaigns. He resented the cost of raising me, begrudged me eyeglasses and orthopedic shoes.
When I hear repug rhetoric it brings me back to the worst parts of my childhood, to the numerous disagreements I had with him over the years, his warped and faulty reasoning.
His parents, only brother and his family, all Democrats. So Democrat in my blood, but I sometimes fear it's tainted by my converted to republican father! He also gave me high blood sugar and high cholesterol.

I also found out I'm part Dutch! I never knew that and that is how I'm related to both.
