Meadows says Fauci wrong to compare coronavirus to 1918 pandemic

White House chief of staff Mark Meadows said on Thursday that Anthony Fauci was wrong to liken the coronavirus to the 1918 flu pandemic, calling his remarks “false” and “irresponsible.”
“He was at Georgetown the other day and he suggested that this virus was worse or as bad as the 1918 flu epidemic. And I can tell you that not only is that false, it is irresponsible to suggest so.”

Meadows was referring to remarks Fauci made Tuesday during a Georgetown University Global Health Initiative webinar during which he described the coronavirus as a “pandemic of historic proportions” and suggested it was possible the coronavirus could approach the “seriousness” of the 1918 pandemic.

“Right now if you look at the magnitude of the 1918 pandemic where anywhere from 50 to 75 to 100 million people died (worldwide), I mean that was the mother of all pandemics and truly historic,” Fauci said. Fauci said the two pandemics are similar because they were caused by new viruses that jumped from animals to humans and that were also highly transmissible between people.

Fauci has been a key public health voice amid the coronavirus pandemic, offering unvarnished assessments of the threat presented by COVID-19 that have cut against more rosy pronouncements from President Trump and the White House. Fauci at times has contradicted Trump’s public statements without directly criticizing the president.

Meadows on Thursday said that the White House has “a lot of people that have a lot of different opinions”, and called Fauci’s remarks “false” and “irresponsible.”

We're not there yet... don't know what next year will be.

Also, fortunately, much of the rest of the world has handled this much better than we have. In 1918, it was a global problem for more than a year. Now, it's most a problem HERE.

The pandemic went into 1919.

We're not there yet but it should be a precautionary tale about a virus can spread when it is not checked.

just because of the advances in hospital/medical care, medical technology and communications since 1918.

I can't imagine how crude things were back in 1918 - and with no internet, TV or cell phones like we have now - think about how hard it was to get the message out to the masses.

So the virus itself could be as bad or worse than that of the 1918 virus and that's probably what Fauci was pointing out - but because of our sophisticated health care of today - the death toll won't be nearly as bad - Thank God.

Watched "Influenza 1918" last night and we're following their same path. October was the deadliest month and it looks like we're headed there.

One thing that touched me was that young men being brought to hospital were wrapped in a sheet and a toe tag put on them right away. The nurses knew they'd probably be gone by the time they came back 💔

His medical degree is from , oh wait, he has no medical degree, his advanced degree is in , oh wait, he has no advanced degree, his bachelors is in, oh wait he has no Bachelors degree, his Associates of Arts, mind you not science but AA/Arts clearly puts him on the same footing as Dr Fauci who actually also has Arts Degree but a Bachelor of Arts and then went to an Ivy League Medical School graduating at the top of his class.

Who do you think we should listen to on COVID stuff, the guy with the AA in Arts or the MD from Cornell who graduated first in his class.....

"Meadows incorrectly claimed to hold a Bachelor of Arts from the University of South Florida for many years in his official biography maintained by the Office of the Historian of the U.S. House of Representatives. In actuality, he graduated from the University of South Florida with an Associate of Arts"
