The nine largest brick-and-mortar retail companies, which the National Retail Federation ranks based on global sales, have adopted new policies to require customers to wear masks inside U.S. stores.

Costco began enforcing masks on May 4, and two months passed before other top retailers followed suit. Walmart, Inc. seemed to have set off a firehouse with its announcement on July 15 that masks would be required in its namesake stores and Sam’s Club locations.

Seven more of the largest brick-and-mortar retailers in the U.S. announced similar policies within two days: Kroger, CVS Health, Walgreens, Target, Albertsons Companies (which owns Safeway, Tom Thumb, and Acme, among other brands). Lowe’s and Home Depot both announced mask requirements Friday.

Dollar Tree has quietly gone back on its policy of making masks mandatory for all shoppers, as other retailers do exactly the opposite

Dollar Tree shoppers are no longer required to wear masks in its stores unless mandated by state law.

The dollar chain quietly reversed its policy on masks in an announcement on Thursday. It had previously required all customers to wear face coverings while shopping at its 15,000-plus stores in the US but as of Thursday, this is merely a request and not a requirement.

Forbes was first to report the news.

Good, herd them all in together with their piles of cheap crap. Poor people can put on a mask and go to Walmart/Target.

I was at a Walmart in East Tennessee yesterday. They had one of their two entrances closed so they could, according to their sign, more easily enforce their required mask policy. Everyone had to pass through a fenced partition to enter the store. The store employee stationed at the gate to enforce mask usage allowed everyone to enter, mask or not. Once inside it appeared that only half of the patrons complied.

One entrance was closed and the other was manned. Signs were posted stating that masks are required. There was no signage stating that "on future date masks are required." The person at the gate allowed everyone through. I have no idea why they failed to enforce something that was clearly displayed on the storefront.

Guy had a tablet and was confirming it was ok to go in, based upon allowed occupancy %.
Guy behind me was unmasked & employee stopped him, told him to get lost.
Guy left without incident.
For all I know, he went back to his car to get a mask.
But, this was a week ago and corporate hadn't even issued this directive yet.

I hope that they enforce the policy on the 20th as others have noted but my local Walmart has the signs posted but aren't requiring masks. Maybe they are giving people advance warning but there was no such indication on their sign.

..."Per CDC recommendations, all staff & customers should wear a mask..."
What's different is they now have a staff member stopping people who can't read the sign or insist it doesn't mean them.
So, it went from a strong suggestion to "Wear a mask or get lost!"
I'm glad to see it!

...Meijer regarding masks being required to be in the store.

I wish the signs about masks that store post at the entrances would say something to the effect of, “A properly worn mask is required.”

Overall mask compliance is pretty good here (far northwest suburbs of Chicago), but there are always a few doofuses (doofae?) walking around with their masks on their chins.

Probably straight south of you, 60-70 miles.
I'd say 90% or better. Except at the liquor stores!
I just go to one, but at the others I drive by, it cannot be better than 50%.

I don't know when they started as this was the first time (this past Thurs) I visited since March. Quite out of my neighborhood. Pre covid19 I'd be there 3 - 4 times/month.
