In Portland, Protests Continue and Federal Agents Arrive, Raising Tensions
PORTLAND, Ore.On the 47th consecutive day of protests in this city, more than 200 people marched across the Morrison Bridge into the center of downtown to hear a speech by a Black woman who said her son had been killed by police.
Most left after the event ended at dusk on Tuesday, but a couple of dozen walked to a nearby park across from the Multnomah County Justice Center, where a group has gathered every night since soon after George Floyd was killed by Minneapolis police on May 25.
Small groups that stay out at night after the end of the main protests have at times spray-painted graffiti, thrown rocks at officers, broken windows and sent fireworks into a courthouse, causing a blaze, according to local and federal law enforcement.
In response, the Trump administration has sent federal agents, whose actions have drawn widespread condemnation here and raised tensions.
