(32,974 posts)Wiki-"The 2016 United States House of Representatives sit-in began on June 22, 2016, when members of the House Democratic Caucus, led by Georgia Representative John Lewis and Massachusetts Representative Katherine Clark, and Illinois Representative Robin Kelly, declared their intention to remain on the floor of the United States House of Representatives until its Republican Speaker, Paul Ryan, allowed votes on gun control legislation in the aftermath of the June 12, 2016 Orlando nightclub shooting. The sit-in was staged by about 60 legislators.[a] Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and Hillary Clinton showed their support via Twitter.[citation needed]
The sit-in, which was quickly organized and caught House Republicans off-guard, resulted in the Speaker pro tempore, Dan Webster, ordering the House into recess, with the cameras which provide video coverage of the chamber's daily proceedings to news networks including C-SPAN consequently shut off. Democrats refused to leave the floor during this recess and instead gave speeches, streamed online to over a million individuals via Periscope and Facebook, demanding Congressional action to combat gun violence.[4]
The House was reconvened by Ryan later on June 22 at 10:00 p.m. to consider a presidential veto message, and again at 2:30 a.m. on June 23 to vote on a bill to fund the Department of Veterans Affairs, military construction, and the country's response to the outbreak of the Zika virus, both times to chaotic scenes in the chamber. The House was then adjourned until July 5, without having taken action on any of the measures demanded by Democrats.[5] Despite this, many Democrats insisted they would remain on the floor regardless, with California congresswoman Maxine Waters saying she would remain in place "until hell freezes over".[6]
A group of the Democrats ultimately occupied the floor through the night, only leaving on the afternoon of June 23, with Lewis as the last speaker before the sit-in's conclusion.

(9,651 posts)Too many tears.
We were so blessed to have this man among us.
He was, and will always be, a light along the path for all of us to follow.
He has more than earned his rest. But how I wish he could have stayed for so much longer. We will have to fight that much harder, in his name, and in the name of so many others, now that he is gone.
Rest peacefully, Congressman Lewis.
Thank you so much for an incredible lifetime of work and devotion to our country and her people.
May the universe surround your family and friends in love and comfort.

(8,329 posts)That is the way I will remember Mr Lewis. What an amazing person. I was fortunate to get to know him and learn from him. He will be missed. The House has lost its moral compass.
He worked hard and labored long, he fought the good fight with courage and dignity. May he now Rest In Peace and in power.

(855 posts)It's too bad he didn't make it to see the outcome of all these protests. Things finally seem to be picking up steam. Things he fought for so long ago and up to the present.
It's a little disturbing that MSNBC has this send off already prepared, but I'm not in the news business. I guess I can see how it made sense to prepare, it's just a little creepy.
Rest in peace, sir, and thank you.

RepJohnLewis was a titan of the civil rights movement whose goodness, faith and bravery transformed our nation. Every day of his life was dedicated to bringing freedom and justice to all.

John Lewiss memory moves us all to, in the face of injustice, make good trouble, necessary trouble. May it be a comfort to his son John-Miles & his entire family that so many mourn their loss at this sad time.
RIP, John and thank you for your lifetime of service to humanity.
