The Edmund Pettus Bridge, named after a member of the KKK, should be renamed after John Lewis. (Original Post) Drunken Irishman Jul 2020 OP

Edmund Pettus was a senior officer in the Confederate Army ( <--- means TRAITOR ) who served as a US Senator *and* a KKK Grand Dragon. He deserves scorn, not a bridge named after him.

This is a no brainer.

First of all it’s an old pos bridge not worthy to have a hero’s name. There are other reasons that I would have difficulty articulating right now.

If it wasn’t the EP Bridge it would have been torn down and replaced long ago. Leave it stand as a reminder of the hate and bigotry that John and other hero’s conquered.

where statues of racist men used to be. Good time to start honoring Black heroes and heroines. We've had plenty of them, and more coming forward every day.

For some reason I thought that it was already agreed upon, but maybe I heard someone like the Rev suggest it on a talk show.

of the bridge would be a state matter, I doubt that the Alabama legislature and Governor would think highly of that idea, somehow. If Alabama is like most states, naming of bridges and highways is a function the legislature handles, with the Governor signing any such naming.

I believe Alabama is about the last state that would do such a thing, somehow.
