WASHINGTON (AP) Its come to this for Republicans straining to defend their Senate majority in Novembers elections: Theyre air-dropping millions of dollars into races in Alabama, Kentucky and other red states where Donald Trump coasted during his 2016 presidential election triumph.
This year, challenged by Trumps fumbled handling of the coronavirus pandemic, the crippled economy and his racially inflammatory stances, Republicans face potentially competitive races theyd normally have locked down. Compounding their problems is strong fundraising by Democratic candidates thats kept them in contention in unlikely locations.
The presidents weakening poll numbers over the last several months have made down-ballot races more competitive, said GOP pollster Whit Ayres. While saying he believes Republicans will win many of the contested seats, Ayres added, Its fair to say the map is expanded.
GOP fretting is being aggravated by some polls showing Trump trailing nationally and in some battleground states against Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.

(8,291 posts)...is the prospect of every sitting Republican losing to a Democrat this year. 70 senate seats is barely outside of our reach, but not too far if we play our cards right.

(8,291 posts)Anything above 51 would delightful. But if people finally come to an understanding how fucking dangerous this party is, 70 would be common sense. That is still beyond a fantasy, though.

If the Republicans are so fond of the filibuster, they will be welcome to reinstate it when they next control the Senate. Will they? Of course not, and that proves that the filibuster has outlived its usefulness.

(15,278 posts)it's not unusual for every close down ballot race to go to the party of the wave. If one seat flips, they all, or most all, do, too.
