(CNN)Police near Minneapolis used drones last week to check if sunbathers at a lakeside beach were breaking the law by going nude or topless.
The Golden Valley Police Department used the high-tech surveillance devices at Twin Lake on July 10 after receiving complaints from the public, city communications director Cheryl Weiler told CNN.
"This stuff has been going on there for decades," she said. "When the police are called to the park it's because someone has complained."

The somewhat secluded beach is known for being "a safe place to just be comfortable," Elsie Olin, a frequent visitor, told CNN affiliate WCCO.
Police Sgt. Randy Mahlen told WCCO that using drones "would be no different than a surveillance camera in a public place for a high-crime area."

Yet, there is always an accumulation of fishing boats in the ocean, in front of this beach. Why would that be?

(15,373 posts)A lot of Millennials and Gen Z women now go to Gunnison, Sandy Hook.
I haven't been to Gunnison's since 1990. I go to Sandy H about 6 times a year for birds, photography and such.

(15,373 posts)While there, there were three early 20ish ladies that sat in front of me. They had to sit close, as it was very crowded that day (towel to towel I was about 3 feet apart from them). All removed everything, tops and bottoms. They were friendly, and were drinking. We exchanged beers in a friendly trade, as canned beer was allowed before last year.
Every so often, one of them adjusted their towel and got the sand off of it, bending over butt-naked into my view. I saw everything, and there was no hair or anything covering the parts on any of them. I'm no perv, but it was literally impossible not to look.
One of the other three was sitting in a beach chair, directly in front of me, and was spread-eagle the entire time, even while we chatted. I had to think of trees and baseball just to hide my emotions!
Nice group though, and very friendly!

(1,977 posts)What do police actually do to keep us safe? Lately I cannot think of a damn thing.
They are great at giving out tickets and raising money for municipalities but they dont seem to be able to salve many crimes. In Minneapolis I believe their track record on rape and sexual abuse cases are abysmally bad. Thefts as I recall are terrible too. It seems to me that they just exist to harass people and deal with mostly petty bullshit. And at what cost to the public? I heard on Thom Hartman a few weeks ago that in a lot of cities they account for something like 1/3 of the citys funding.
The police system in this country is a fucking joke. Recording nude sunbathers..... Like why are we spending time on this?

(16,646 posts)And yet very little. Their actions are most often after the fact, thus the expression "first RESPONDERS". The fact of their existence does present a deterrent to SOME crimes. And their response is a deterrent to other types of crimes, or at least in the nature of the criminals actions. The truth is that much of what we expect out of them is investigative in nature and doesn't really require the guns and uniforms and flashing lights. Quite honestly, most "detective" work should probably be run out of the prosecutors office and police be left to "responding". DOT should be out writing speeding tickets and parking citations. Dept. of Health should handle addiction and there are other departments for homelessness, etc. You'll notice that the SEC and Treasury tend to handle "white collar" crimes. Much of what the police are empowered to do can and should be handled by more regulatory type enforcement. And that would tend to avoid the "Karen" incidents of people calling 911 over petty disputes. Basically we don't need a police force, we need a department of public safety.

And mind you... my expectations for the profession generally aren't that high...
