golfing itself is not exercise. Especially when using a golf cart.
Another lie or just sheer stupidity from the POtuS.

(17,863 posts)I would not begrudge him if he didn't put federal money in his own pocket and kept it to a reasonable level.
Also if he didn't complain about the black guy who had the job before him golfing.

(33,579 posts)But don't give us bullshit about he needs it for exercise, and stop spending OUR money on it.

So much less thinking!

(65,042 posts)I do not consider it exercise.
When it was ok to play here in April, but clubhouses needed to be closed & no carts, I walked. That was exercise, especially before I bought a used pull cart. Walking four miles carrying an extra 20 pounds is exercise.
Riding in a miniature car, stopping to hit, then riding again is not.
Especially true of PINO, who doesn't park and walk a hundred feet to the putting green.
One thing I'll grant him: he claims to shoot 75, when it's really 98. Swinging that much more would wear me out, too!
I'd be on the 25th hole before I took 50 full swings!!!

(14,565 posts)I miss walking but it was the correct decision.
Golf may not be exercise but there is a notable difference in my flexibility when I am playing compared to when a take a layoff from the game. Once I start limbering up with the clubs again I'm shocked at how stiff I am with much shorter backswing.
ProfessorGAC
(65,042 posts)Very simple case for me.
I have a swing stretching routine I do at 1st tee.
When I start it, my left shoulder gets tight at 50 degrees of turn.
When I get to 70, my upper back feels tight.
When I'm done, I can turn 95 degrees and nothing is tight.
Only take a couple minutes for upper body and maybe a minute & a half for hips.
If I don't do that, takes 2 holes to swing freely.
Now, I'm hitting the first shot unrestricted.
Doesn't mean I hit every first shot well, but at least there's no straining. Today I did. Birdied one, bogeyed 8, and 10 pars. Got rained out after 12.
I agree it's a very good way to stretch muscles & soft tissue!

(65,042 posts)I was talking about Agassi.
I don't equate Agassi with cheating. Hard to cheat in competitive tennis, isn't it?
Wounded Bear
(58,654 posts)My bad.
ProfessorGAC
(65,042 posts)And he cheats in the worst way. He's a stroke shaver.
Drive, second shot, 30 yard pitch, 25 feet from hole, pick up call it a 4.
Or, 2nd shot in water, drop forward, pitch onto green, pick up. Call a likely 2 putt into one, don't count the penalty shot.
Turns 4s to 5s, 7s into 5s. Shaves 24 shots a round.
Shoots 99, says he shot 75.
There's no doubt that he does that.

(23,340 posts)Marvelous serve, Mr President, Sir. Thank you for this opportunity to praise your shots.
Golf next week, Sir, yes Sir, Mr President Sir.

Every serve is in, AND unreturnable.

(14,565 posts)Played at perhaps the highest level of any sport, given what should be possible given all the variables and complications of making that round ball cooperate.
It is the reason premier athletes in other sports are obsessed with golf and hold the elite golfers in absolute awe. Tiger Woods can play trump card over Michael Jordan and not bat an eye. He knows damn well Jordan envies what he has done far beyond Tiger ever caring about a basketball career. This type of thing surfaces all the time. Rafael Nadal said he felt nervous when Tiger attended his matches in majors, because he idolizes Tiger.
It is only clueless types who devalue golf. It is so incredibly difficult to play that the younger generations give up and don't want to embarrass themselves. Somehow they think it's like a video game. Then once they actually are on the course they take one swing and a miss -- give up -- and then dismiss the sport as not worth their time.
They are not fooling anybody.
When I take friends to a pro golf tournament for the first time, the look of astonishment on their faces is guaranteed. They are in disbelief that the PGA pros hit the ball that far and that straight, plus the deft touch around the greens.

(33,579 posts)And Pros need to be in good shape. They do that off the course. Playing is not really exercise.
ProfessorGAC
(65,042 posts)Especially carrying, because of that extra 20 pounds.
But, going to the range isn't exercise. It's just practice.
Playing piano isn't exercise, but one still has to practice. That doesn't make piano playing a sport either!
Well, unless you have to carry the piano upstairs to practice!

(65,042 posts)Geez, he practically drives onto the greens and teeboxes.
He's not even walking that quarter mile!

(15,031 posts)and that's as close to baseball perfection as possible without actually getting there. And on the topic of perfect games, NY Yankee pitcher David Wells reached that pinnacle in 1998, still drunk from an all-night party he only left to go to the ball park. So I gather Agassi isn't much on baseball being a sport, either.
Hell, for that matter, Australian tennis pro Patrick Rafter won a Davis Cup match in 1997 in three straight sets while drunk. So much for Agassi's chosen "sport" -- he's just a gamer like all the rest of us.
