From the AP (through Political Wire):
In the four months since Joe Biden effectively won the Democratic presidential nomination, he has focused on consolidating the partys divergent and often warring factions. As the closing stretch of the campaign nears, that effort will expand to include Republicans disaffected with President Trump, the AP reports.
Former Ohio Gov. John Kasich, a Republican and frequent Trump critic, has been approached and is expected to speak at the Democratic National Convention on Bidens behalf next month
Kasich is among a handful of high-profile Republicans likely to become more active in supporting Biden in the fall.
Trump, meanwhile, is doing virtually nothing to expand his appeal beyond his most loyal supporters.

(4,792 posts)kasich has his own presidential aspirations. I assume this is a play for Ohio in the general election, but dont see his appearance At the Dem convention making a difference. I bet all Kasich Republicans already support Biden.

(22,911 posts)This is that rare time in a nation's history when a broad united front against fascism is urgently called for. There is a lot of serious talk by a broad range of rather sober prominent voices warning that Trump might try to call the election invalid if he looses. Our democracy has never been at greater risk since the Civil War. I get that Kasich supports the GOP agenda. Churchill and Stalin didn't have much in common either other than a common resolve to defeat Hitler.
Biden is helping to build a psychological political landslide mindset through these types of moves. It won't turn Trumpers into Biden supporters, but it could help turn Republicans who were inclined to just abstain into Biden voters, and we need a landslide in November.

(4,792 posts)I agree a united front is desirable, but I doubt that his speaking At the convention will make any significant difference. Let him get do some campaigning.

Kasich's endorsement of Joe if it happens should be treated as "That's cool, thanks" and left at that. He did his fair share to put Ohio behind the times.

(1,684 posts)The Republicans are who they are overall, not a great bunch. The moderate center right types arent too bad but the rest of the conservative to far right are a mix of mostly deplorables and all about them and THEIR wallets and fuck everyone else. The moderates will excuse Trump even though they dont like him personally because they agree with his policy about judges and taxes. The rest love Trump because theyre just like him. While indulging all their despicable biases, they pray at the altar of the almighty dollar.
