PORTLAND, Ore. —
A video taken Saturday night in downtown Portland showing officers attacking a man with a baton and pepper spraying him as he stood in front of them went viral over the weekend.


The man attacked in the video, Navy veteran Chris David, said he suffered a broken hand in two places and is set to have surgery this week.


David told CNN this was his first protest. He said he was enraged to see federal officers in Portland and wanted to ask them directly why they were there. Instead, he was attacked.

In the video you can see David is standing still. That's when an officer hits him repeatedly with a baton. When he still doesn't move, he is pepper sprayed in the face.

Portland police told CNN that their officers were not responsible for the attack. U.S. Customs and Border Patrol said the same thing.


The Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Marshals have not responded to inquiries.
