Trump administration preparing to send federal agents to Chicago

(CNN)The Trump administration is preparing to send federal agents to Chicago this week, two law enforcement officials tell CNN, as President Donald Trump and top officials are promising to crack down on what they say are violence and the increase in crime in major cities.

One senior law enforcement official told CNN that there are plans to send federal agents to Chicago through the end of the summer. The agents will focus on illegal gun sales and gun violence and outstanding warrants, among other targets, according to one of the sources. Both sources said an announcement could be made in the coming days.

The effort appears to be separate from the federal presence in Portland, Oregon, which was part of the President's demand that federal buildings be protected from protesters.

Chicago's mayor warned Monday about such plans in the wake of criticisms of how federal agents are facing off with protesters in Portland.

7. He'll Run Up Against A Quadruple Threat In Chicago....

A black, female, lesbian, Democratic Mayor. Mayor Lori Lightfoot. She's been trading nasty exchanges with him lately and I don't think he likes it.

I'm thinking that the unrest we had in Chicago over the weekend was a set-up by Trump so he could justify sending his goons into Chicago. In fact, yesterday I heard that the head of the FOP - Fraternal Order of Police (a Police Union of sorts) sent Trump a letter requesting Trump's help to quell the unrest in Chicago and help out the police.

The whole thing smells. It will be interesting to see how Mayor Lightfoot and Governor Pritzker deal with Trump if he sends in troops. Illinois is a Democratic State. Our State Senators our Durbin and Duckworth.

At an unrelated news conference Monday morning, Mayor Lori Lightfoot said she has great concerns about the general possibility of President Donald Trump sending feds to Chicago based on what has happened in Portland.

If Trump wants to help, she said, he could boost federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives resources and fully fund prosecutors.

“We don’t need federal agents without any insignia taking people off the streets and holding them, I think, unlawfully,” Lightfoot said.
