CA Progressives want Bass, Lee or (Nina)Turner as VP

Bass is reasonable and on the shortlist, Lee is less likely but amazing, and Turner is just an insane proposition.

Rep. Karen Bass, D-Los Angeles, is one of progressives’ picks to be Joe Biden’s running mate in the Democratic presidential campaign.

Former Ohio state Sen. Nina Turner (left), shown with former presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders and activist Jim Hightower in 2018, is one of progressives’ picks to be Joe Biden’s running mate in the Democratic presidential campaign.

California Sen. Kamala Harris is widely believed to be on Joe Biden’s short list for vice president, but a group of Bernie Sanders supporters in the California Democratic Party wants the nominee-to-be to pick either Oakland Rep. Barbara Lee or one of two other Black women instead.

Lee, Los Angeles Rep. Karen Bass and Nina Turner, a former Ohio state senator, would make excellent running mates, Sanders delegates to the Democratic National Convention wrote in a letter to Biden that was obtained by The Chronicle.

“In order to meet this historic moment, Democrats must select an exceptional progressive vice presidential candidate who will both inspire the 90 million Americans who did not vote in 2016 to cast a ballot this November and lead America into a new era of equality, compassion, and economic justice,” the Sanders backers wrote.

He has a spare after all.

Mentioning Reps. Bass or Lee along with her sounds rather misguided, though. Neither supported Bernie Sanders for president, for instance. They're both long-time liberal Democratic members of the large house progressive caucus, and also chair and former chair of the congressional black caucus. Lee's now one of three co-chairs of the very important steering and policy committee.

Perhaps Nina Turner's best opportunity to rise in an organization, and that of others who are in such passionate disagreement with most Democratic voters that they could support illicitly taking the primary nomination away from the choice of the majority, would be to create a political home where anti-democracy leftists could gather. Their choice to stay registered as Democrats, of course, but... of course no power in the Democratic Party for them. That's basic.

Preference is not predicated on candidate loyalty, but actual progressive credentials. Lee, for example, is co chair of the progressive caucus and has advocated progressive policies her entire career. Karen Bass is not as progressive but prevails in insurmountable character and integrity. I think progressives see that.

The thing is, we can't fuck this up, and we have to take down Trump. At all costs. I want someone who has decent enough popularity and can bring in the moderates.

Plus whoever is vice president may have to run in 2024 if Joe is too old for a second term. That's something that has to be paid attention to as well.

them to believe progressive Democrats are not are fringe types. They're few and, by definition, very vulnerable to manipulation.

They get to offer suggestions like everyone else, and Biden's team will thank them for them. But Biden and his team are people of good judgement and Biden's workmate will be vetted by them and chosen by Biden himself for himself, but we know good character and judgement, and proven competence, are absolute requirements.

I was just amused at the idea of Nina Turner. Good grief.
