Trump on Ghislaine Maxwell: "I just wish her well, frankly. I've met her numerous times over the years...I just wish her well, whatever it is"

Nah.

(31,261 posts)By giving Maxwell a pardon, she gets effectively shut up, so big names she has the goods on escape, and the abused girls, who are now women and some mothers, get abused again.

(10,269 posts)which means no 5th amendment rights. Which means she cant refuse to answer questions under oath without risking contempt and confinement.

(31,261 posts)Who is going to enforce the rule of law with Trump refusing to cooperate with investigations and withholding any information that he wants to.
Volaris
(10,269 posts)For exactly the above reason: now he can still plead the fifth.

(31,261 posts)think that it does, I dont know what to say. If she can incriminate him, Trump will find a way to free her in a way that she wont talk, then he will ignore calls that he overstepped his authority. We are seeing his tendency over and over, I really dont understand why you think that he will stay within traditional legal boundaries when he has something to gain by not doing so.

(3,625 posts)If he pardons her she has to admit guilt and loses the right to plead the 5th, so the investigators can then ask her about anything and anybody under oath and if she fails to answer or lies, it's another felony. He can't commute her sentence until there is a trial and a sentence to commute, which first means Ghislaine will be in jail for a year waiting it out. She might be more inclined to cut a deal with the prosecutor than to wait that out. Roger had a lot invested in keeping quiet, but Ghislaine doesn't and she will have lots of opportunities to tune up and sing before Trump can do what he did for Roger.

(19,831 posts)She has multiple citizenships so I don't know if that complicates things or simplifies them.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)withhold any information that he wants to from investigators, regardless of who they are. He is even ignoring a Supreme Court ruling on DACA.

(3,625 posts)He was out of jail for the whole trial process and Trump commuted his sentence just before he would have had to report to jail. Ghislaine is in jail and the judge has made it clear she's going to stay there until her trial, which will be at least a year from now. There's nothing Trump can do about that and I can't see her putting up with it if she can cut a deal with someone else.

(3,625 posts)And while Trump has proven willing and able to trash many institutions, some remain independent. Roger Stone proclaimed loyalty to Trump, and Trump learned with Joe Arpaio that there is a down side to a pardon, which is why he commuted Roger's sentence instead -- better to be a felon than be compelled to testify, after all. That he did it that way suggests that Stone could have been compelled to testify if pardoned and that this was worth worrying about. Ghislaine has not proclaimed loyalty to anybody except Epstein and probably has a lot more Epstein dirt to make public than Stone ever dreamed of.
The way prosecutions work is that a witness can get off lightly if they produce a bigger fish, but with Epstein's death Maxwell is now the biggest fish herself in the whole Epstein network. The only way she can buy her way out is to offer up something even bigger, or to threaten the right people with a willingness to do so.

(1,680 posts)You know that she has associates who have the evidence and who have been instructed to release it if she's killed. And....she's made sure that we, including Trump, et al, know it. Trump most likely HAS to pardon her after the election. A storm of criticism is not nearly as bad as being charged with child sex crimes.
