Despite overwhelming evidence that face masks effectively reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus, some people still refuse to wear masks.
In Ireland, where mask-wearing last week became legally mandatory on public transport and in shops, general practitioner Maitiu O Tuathail saw an influx of patients panicking about wearing them. They had read false claims on social media that face masks can lower blood oxygen levels and even cause brain damage.
One patient (a mask-wearer) suggested O Tuathail post a video to counteract these claims, so he filmed himself testing his oxygen levels while wearing not one but six surgical face masks.

His oxygen level remained stable at 99 percent as he donned as many masks as his ears could handle.
"That's consistent whether you wear six masks for one minute or for the entire day. The level of oxygen in your blood won't change,"
O Tuathail said.
Wearing a mask won't affect your oxygen levels, even if you wear it all day.

(6,110 posts)can not breathe properly even without any mask. The doctor looks young and strong. It is different with older folks.

Those who must go out all the time need to try to routinely protect themselves adequately, though.
This doctor probably used genuine surgical masks, the kind you can't make a candle flicker when trying to blow through. I double up the fake ones available these day, the pleated blue types that look like real surgical masks but aren't. But wearing two increases the number of layers, allows me to offset to cover lower under the jaw, and also makes them fit a bit tighter around my face.
I haven't tried six but will for fun, though our best protection since we're retired is the same as your MIL's.

(6,110 posts)Also, most masks will not prevent you from inhaling airborne floating virus droplets.
Wearing one mask is already uncomfortable. Wearing multiple masks is never going to go over well.
Masks mainly protect others from you because if you sneeze or cough or even talk, most of your expectorate gets trapped inside the mask.
So we should all wear a mask whenever in company of others.

(58,785 posts)for over a half year now. They know why. I had pneumonia in early June and their grandfather will be 80 before long. Sad.
That masks are believed better at preventing spread doesn't mean they don't play a limited but significant part in preventing infection, though. They help keep our hands away from our orifices and also unquestionably lessen the number of virus particles that get through to us. Not being made safe doesn't mean not being safer.

(33,992 posts)What they are less likely to prevent are inhaling aerosolized (much much smaller) virus.
The airborne droplets are large enough that your mask will generally protect you.

(52,113 posts)i'm guessing the number is just a wee bit lower than the 140k+ who have died from covid-19 so far....

(1,890 posts)but not all. For elderly, COPD and pulmonary fibrosis folks they may legitimately have
trouble drawing sufficient air through the mask and clearing CO2. So, this is a nice demonstration
but as the other poster pointed out - the tester is a healthy young man.

My SpO2 the same without mask and with masks. The most comfortable mask was the Sonovia from Israel because it wasnt as warm and stuffy. It also has as good a protection as the N95.

(32,633 posts)At least wear a face shield. I have both and the shield allows you to lower the mask if talking or breathing is a problem and you can eat with it on.

(14,852 posts)If wearing a mask is a struggle, exposure to the public and the virus is surely a death sentence.
Not to mention that the people seen complaining about masks in videos have all had a good set of lungs... or they couldn't scream so loudly and send their droplets flying far and wide.

(3,299 posts)And it doesn't matter what kind. We have
tried countless types. They suck and we
both don't like being told what to do.
But we will wear them.
