Mitt Romney questions Trump getting 'cozy' with dictators, direction of GOP

Deseret News

SALT LAKE CITY — Sen. Mitt Romney says he doesn’t know where the Republican Party is headed as the president cozies up to dictators, and character doesn’t seem to matter in leaders anymore.

The Utah Republican also said during a Center for Strategic and International Studies webcast Tuesday that the U.S. response to COVID-19 has hurt its role as a world leader.

“I have no idea what’s going to happen with my party. I represent a very small slice of my party. The party has taken a different course. My party was very strong anti-dictators, anti-authoritarian leaders, anti people like Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin, and now the party seems to be more comfortable with people like that,” he said.

Romney talked about the GOP, coronavirus and America’s place on the world stage in response to questions from moderator Nina Easton at the end of an hourlong discussion that focused mostly on the U.S.-China relationship.

Should trump lose there will certainly be a Republican Civil War. You can see the combatants taking their sides already.

Representing the racist side of the party is trump, representing the christian fundamentalists is Pence, representing the war hawks is Cheney and representing the county club Republicans is Romney.

I think a trump pence victory (god forbid) would squeeze out a guy like Romney and many of the country club Republicans uncomfortable with the racist.

with one exception.IMHO a Trump victory in November is the end of the Republic.
That is exactly why I call on Republicans who are "alarmed" by what is happening to their party to CROSS OVER NOW.

He deserves credit where it's due, but that credit amounts to a participation trophy.

Like Collins, he makes the occasional toothless display of disapproving Trump, then promptly falls back in line.

your party will go back to being "anti" all the things they were "pro" for under trump.

Going to be exceedingly difficult for them to explain their hypocrisy though. It's WAY off the charts.

...called themselves "anti-communist."

As long as they checked that box they received a warm welcome from your party and had carte blanche to get away with murder. Quite literally.
