The former Minneapolis police officer who was charged in George Floyd's death and his estranged wife face nine felony income-tax charges, according to the Washington County, Minnesota, attorney.
Derek Chauvin and his wife, Kellie, did not file income tax returns in the state for some years and underreported income for others, according to court records.
Each count carries a maximum five-year prison sentence and a fine of $10,000.
Derek's attorney had no comment on the charges, while Kellie's did not respond to CNN's emailed requests for comment.

And George Floyd was murdered over twenty dollars.

(64,995 posts)No, I'm actually thrilled this criminal continues to be exposed for what he is.
A smug thug.
That's all that drone is.

I wonder whether the police unions aren't giving advice and seminars about how to underreport one's income to the IRS. Might be an interesting question for an enterprising US Attorney to pursue under a Biden administration. Seems like it would fall under RICO if something like that was happening ahem ahem ahem.

2. If people are aware of you, they might look closer at you.
3. Keep your head down.
Derek Chauvin apparently wasn't aware of those rules. Now, his regular crimes are getting investigated. Stupid criminals get caught, dude!

(146,286 posts)I don't know about the Minnesota Revenue Department, but they can assemble a case as well, no doubt. The IRS is the most dangerous for crooks, though.
Derek Chauvin was working more than one scam, actually. That Florida residence thing was particularly dangerous for him, I think. Obviously, he didn't live there, so anything he did that claims that is his official residence is bogus on its face. No doubt he was using that to fudge on his taxes here in MN. Not smart at all.
He's in more and more trouble all the time, it seems.

(115,669 posts)He was an airline pilot who listed his residence as Florida, which does not have a state income tax, but all he had there was a post office box. His house was in Minnesota, kids went to school here, etc., but he wasn't paying taxes here. One thing that might have finally got him busted was the fact that his pilot certificate listed his residence address, which the FAA requires - you can't use a p.o. box. And pilot certificate information, including residence addresses, is publicly available on the FAA's web site as long as you have other data, such as date of birth, which the revenooers would already have. (I just searched mine, and there was my full street address). Anyhow, the guy was prosecuted and convicted, and also lost his job and possibly his pilot's license.
Oh wait, now I remember there were more, not just the one I knew of. And Amy Klobuchar was the prosecutor. https://www.postbulletin.com/more-northwest-pilots-accused-of-tax-evasion/article_4350c38d-aeb4-5dea-bef4-c88d2720e7d2.html#:~:text=MINNEAPOLIS%20%2D%2D%20Three%20more%20Northwest,County%20Attorney's%20Office%20said%20Friday.&text=Among%20the%20charges%20were%20tax,filing%20false%20and%20fraudulent%20returns.

(146,286 posts)trying to avoid taxes. It's very, very hard to maintain a lie about something like your residence address. Too many people have that information. Your bank has your address. Your doctor or clinic has it. Lots of people have it.
Go to Walgreens to pick up a prescription and they ask for your address. It's on your Minnesota Driver's Licence. You can't get one of those without a Minnesota address. And lots of places want your Driver's License number. In fact, I just wrote it on my absentee ballot this very day to mail in my vote.
It's complicated to hide who you are and where you reside. Too complicated, really, for almost anyone to get away with faking it.

(115,669 posts)However, the vehicle was serviced 11 times in Minnetonka and never in Florida, investigators say they found. Kellie Chauvin told investigators they opted for Florida because it was less expensive. The taxes due on the SUV had it been registered in Minnesota were $5,053....
The charges document various sources of income for the couple. The complaints said that between 2014 and 2019, Derek Chauvin made between $52,000 and $72,000 annually as a police officer. He also worked off-duty security nearly every weekend in that time at El Nuevo Rodeo dance club, Cub Foods, Midtown Global Market and EME Antro Bar on E. Lake Street.
During that span, Chauvin failed to pay taxes on nearly $96,000 he earned from El Nuevo Rodeo alone, investigators estimated.
The tax investigation was already in progress before he killed George Floyd. Too bad they didn't get to him sooner.

(22,112 posts)way to show others how they are upholding the law.
Maybe this tactic (monitoring one's tax returns) should be as one of the indicators to gauge whether or not law enforcement personnel will abide by the law, or instead, break the law. And this situation has apparently been going on for some time.
More than likely, our PINO is or has broken the law in not reporting all income or claiming dubious deductions too. One does wonder why in the hell is the PINO resisting releasing his tax returns (any of them)? I suspect very strongly that he's filed false returns before he was president and still is, being that if one perpetuates income tax fraud in one year, it more than likely covers a multi-year period (depreciation deduction (by vastly overstating the value of assets being depreciated over a period of time, depending upon the asset)).
