Worthless approach to fighting crime

Opinion by Jens Ludwig
Updated 9:52 PM ET, Thu July 23, 2020

... News reports suggest that 150 agents are on their way to the Windy City to fight crime. But they aren't likely to help much, particularly if they do in Chicago what they are doing in Portland.

Adding 150 people to the police force Chicago already has (around 13,000) changes the total by about 1%. The best available evidence suggests we would be lucky to get even a 1% reduction in crime as a result.

While the benefits are likely to be negligible, the downside risk is great. Protests around the country after the murder of George Floyd (together with survey results by the Pew Research Center) make clear that people are increasingly concerned about the basic fairness of policing in America.

Federal agents tear-gassing mostly peaceful protesters and throwing them into unmarked vans will understandably just make those concerns worse ...

... Trump said hundreds of agents will be drawn from the Justice Department, which includes the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Agency and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The number of agents involved is not clear. Attorney General Bill Barr suggested at one point that around 200 new agents could end up in Chicago.

A Justice Department press release said Chicago would receive 100 new federal investigators. It also said 100 officers from the U.S. Marshal’s Service and 100 from the Homeland Security Department would be reassigned to the Chicago portion of a crime-fighting effort known as Operation Legend, which was launched last month in Kansas City, Missouri. Many of those agents are already based in and around Chicago. The release said Albuquerque would get more than 25 new federal investigators.

On Thursday, the Justice Department said it also planned to send agents to Cleveland, Detroit and Milwaukee in coming weeks ...

... Trump’s politically charged rhetoric, local activists and officials have come to view with suspicion the more than 200 agents sent to Missouri from the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration, U.S. Marshals Service and other federal agencies. They will have ids and badges and will coordinate with city police. Mayor Lightfoot made the distinction yesterday in a press briefing. She says she knows the person she dealt with on the federal level and trusts him.

She also said if he does send his goons she would be in court immediately.

Dotard is spinning...should say lying about who will be assigned in Chicago to make it appear that he wore down a powerful women mayor of a liberal city
