Do they not realise that they are telling everyone around them that they are horrid selfish wankers?
Today, in England, a new law comes into effect that directs people to wear facemasks in certain inside environments – including shops. The thinking is that it will help build confidence for people to get out there and start reenergising the economy if they feel safe, and face masks as a symbol of that is important, alongside the medical benefits of potential reduced infection spread. In the supermarket this morning and the vast majority had a mask on, but then you have those who would rather die in a ditch than put a bit of cloth over their mouth and nose…The late middle aged white guy in one corner (oh look, privilege in a nut shell), and the teenage ‘it is not going to kill me so why should I care’ in the other. I forgive the teens much more readily than I ever could the white privileged men. Teenagers are supposed to make some dodgy choices, it is part of growing up. But for the others, it is like they have a flashing neon sign over their head shouting spot the horrid selfish wanker, but if you pointed this out to them their entitled outrage would be legend. Heh. They really are awful human beings who think that the rules do not apply to them, it has been ever thus.
The worst thing about the choices that these people are making is that we know Covid-19 outcomes are discriminatory and a healthy middle aged middle class white guy is much less likely to die than some other groups in the community, if infected. I live in an incredibly diverse community and the black and brown communities, just like in the US, have been disproportionately hit on morbidity rates post infection. Not wearing a mask is saying a big fuck you to the more vulnerable to actually dying from this virus. They are shockingly horrid.
