Sounds like he's sending her a message to keep quiet about him, and he'll maybe give her a pardon, exoneration, etc. (wink wink). Not that he will, but maybe he could make her believe that.

He’s pretending he only knows her very superficially, like meeting her at some cocktail party. He knows there are photographs of the four of them together.
