(82,849 posts)The local NBC affiliate had a little interview with Billy Williams, the U.S. Attorney for Oregon, on the sidewalk outside the federal courthouse. He was all about the vandalism and the crime and the this and the that, and all the unpunished criminality going on in Portland every night. Ooh, he was incensed!
The reporter asked him about the presence of federal agents, and Williams trotted out the company line about protecting federal property. The reporter then mentioned those troops roaming the streets and provoking confrontations, and Williams denied that any such thing was happening, until he was presented with footage from Thursday night. A lot of his attitude slipped away in that moment, and he stammered out something about how he'll have to find out what led to the feds roaming the street instead of stoutly guarding the courthouse. Surely there's some Really Good Reason for this.
I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for Williams to explain why the feds went looking for trouble instead of maintaining their posts. Williams, after all, was the U.S. Attorney when the prosecution of the Malheur Wildlife Preserve went so badly sideways, and all the defendants slipped away not guilty of the major charges against them.
