TOPLINE As the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread throughout the U.S. despite mask mandates and social distancing measures, more than 150 medical experts, scientists and other health professionals signed a letter organized by a prominent consumer group and delivered to government leaders Thursday calling for new shutdowns to bring case counts down and hit the reset button to implement a more effective response.
The letter, which was organized by consumer group U.S. PIRG and sent to the Trump administration, congressional leaders and state governors, urges leaders to shut it down now and start over, saying the government must take bold action to save lives.
The signatories call for closing all non-essential businesses and opening restaurants for takeout only, with Americans leaving their houses only to get food and medicine or to exercise and get fresh air.
The letter also says interstate travel should be shut down to keep the virus from spreading from state to state.
The lockdowns should continue until case numbers recede to a level at which we have the capacity to effectively test and trace, at which point we can try a little more opening, one small step at a time.

She made 100% sense, therefore team tRump will do the opposite.

(13,904 posts)I think this is what we have to do with the whole government in 180 days after tRump leaves office. I know politics is politics and can we just take everybody who was working for Obama when he left and have them come back? This would get the Govt kick start with people who know what they are doing.
A thought...

(12,286 posts)We had a chance back in March to have a true nationwide shutdown and we could be like Europe now.
But we never truly shut the economy down and opened what little was closed back up too soon.
Now we are screwed. Its too late. Its everywhere and will spread uncontrolled until (if) we get a vaccine.
The death and suffering will be immeasurable

(11,566 posts)If Americas schoolchildren are sick and dying from schools reopening too soon, will their parents be too distraught and distracted to vote? Trump would do absolutely anything to stay in office.

(2,844 posts)Children and teachers will get sick and some will die. It will become chaotic. You're also 100% correct that President Nazivomit will do anything to stay in office.
The next 3 months are going to be even more ugly than it already is.

(52,161 posts)Even if you could get the hard hit states now to change their ways (and good luck with that) I don't see the north east going along with this either since they did the right thing, have very low case numbers, and can probably start getting back to normal. I can very much see citizens of those states saying f you to places such as Florida, Arizona, and Texas that behaved irresponsibly and are now reaping the whirlwind of having done so.
