Seattle officials bracing for weekend protests -- and intervention of federal agents
Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan on Friday said the city and county are prepared to go to court immediately to prevent federal agents from intervening in planned protests that could turn chaotic this weekend.
During a morning news conference with police Chief Carmen Best and fire Chief Harold Scoggins, Durkans implored protesters to do so peacefully in order to prevent in Seattle the type of chaos that has unfurled in Portland over recent days.
"I have to presume what is happening in Portland could happen here," Durkan said in response to a question from a reporter. That's why, she said, the city held a meeting with county and other regional representatives to determine a legal response that could be implemented quickly.
We want "to make sure we were ready go to court immediately," Durkan said.
For much of the news conference, the mayor and her chiefs implored with protesters to keep it peaceful if they take to Seattle's streets.
"I ask everyone who's protesting this weekend to please do it peacefully," Durkan said. "Please make sure you raise your voices and challenge government, but do it lawfully."
