Hundreds of Texas bar owners pledge defiance to governor's order and will reopen

Hundreds of Texas bar owners say they'll defy Governor Greg Abbott's mandate that ordered them closed after a surge in coronavirus cases.

Approximately 800 bar owners have promised to participate in an event organized by Fort Worth bar owner Chris Polone called the "Freedom Fest" where bar owners have pledged to open their doors in defiance of the governor's orders which could place their state liquor licenses in jeopardy.

Abbott had previously allowed bars to reopen with restrictions but ordered them to close again on June 26 after the state experienced a resurgence of COVID-19 cases.

Bars must adhere to safety measures that include taking customers' temperatures before entering, maintaining social distancing, requiring face coverings and having hand sanitizer available.

The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission is aware of the event and will be conducting inspections, said commission spokesman Chris Porter. Violators of the order could face a 30-day suspension of their liquor license.

Entirely and then see that actions have consequences. He likely will not understand that, but hopefully will see it happen.

A 30-day suspension running simultaneous with the period of closure means they can be stupid and not risk anything at all - they will likely be allowed to open as soon as everyone else did.

They should be no worse than restaurants. Which begs the question of whether indoor seating at restaurants should be permitted.

1. Only allow 25% of your listed occupancy.
2. Please create a floor plan that includes seating(tables/chairs). Please only allow tables
of 4-6 people max. Once tables and chairs are placed please use duct tape to make a square around the tables so those guests can stand within their square. Create a
separate area for media.
Please separate areas/people by a minimum of 6 feet using duct tape or other noticeable markings.
Enforce SOCIAL DISTANCING AND PROTOCOLS ALL NIGHT.
3. Must have hand sanitizer easily accessible to patrons, and have employees/volunteers continuously disinfecting services.
4. Upon guest entry, perform temperature checks.
After doing so manage seating guests in the same manner as a restaurant would. Seating parties one at a time, not only sets an immediate precedence as the guests enter, but also allows for better control over social distancing protocol.
5. Type up and print off COVID-19 Protocols and Procedures and hang them all over your establishment for patrons to see. (We will send you an example if you need help)
6. MASK ARE REQUIRED! With the exception of the 4th Amendment. If someone is not wearing a mask, you may assume it is because of a medical condition. (DO NOT ASK
THEM WHY. DO NOT PERMIT THEM ENTRY because you are forced to assume that the patron has an underlying health issue and does not need to be in attendance for their safety.
7. Gloves are encouraged but not required. However, constant hand washing is a MUST!
8. Designate an employee to film/live stream the entire event. This will protect you from exaggerations, short falls, as well as serve as verbatim proof that our industry can operate safely.
9. The charity you decide to donate to has to be a legal 501.C Non-Profit Business.
10. It is up to your business to decide whether or not you would like to sell alcohol.
11. If TABC or other officials arrive, Remain calm and respectful. Document the entire encounter on film.
12. Abide by ALL 51% Laws in regards to Guns, Outside Drinks, ECT. (You know the rules.)
