Over 30 million people are collecting unemployment benefits due to the recession stemming from the coronavirus pandemic.
Democrats and Republicans are split on how to address the historic unemployment crisis.
Ideas include extending ramped-up unemployment benefits, paying people to return to work, and supplementing state benefits so they amount to 70% of a worker's past earnings.
Congress is in the middle of a heated debate over the $600 weekly boost to unemployment benefits it authorized in March.
Republicans oppose extending it at that level and favor a smaller amount, arguing the enhanced benefit disincentivizes work. Democrats, on the other hand, want to extend those ramped-up payments into next year.

(107,881 posts)I knew it was $600 a week. Guess I was just typing too quickly.
That's still not a lot of money

(6,679 posts)Weekly Unemployment payments here maxes out at $480. Plus an extra $600 a week.
Over $1000 a week? / 40 hrs = $25 an hour? You put 2 workers claiming in the same home we are providing that family with $8000 a month. In Ohio????? Very few people make that much money working. You have people working their butts off and taking home less.
Change the formula. Whatever the unemployment is plus a 90 day supplemental to get them up to whatever percent of the local poverty level for HOUSEHOLD income. 200% or whatever the standard is. If they are out of work and saddled with big car payments and mortgages then address that another way than straight cash payments.
I want to support people absolutely, but if I'm looking at the math right, what we are doing now is not sustainable.

(15,373 posts)My state unemployment is just $147 or so, plus the $600. I was making about $200 a week serving.

(3,401 posts)A formula should have been tied to the take home pay of the employee, ie 80% of take home with a $1000 per week max.
But in the haste of getting something passed this stupid mistake was thrown out there by Steve Mnuchin and accepted by Democrats just so the $3/4 billion anonymous payouts to corporations would pass.

(1,206 posts)what each person was making then suss out 80% of that. Much easier to give a flat amount across the board.
Some states couldn't even seem to do that.

(3,401 posts)... to any and all companies that apply in hopes that they retain employees but there is no requirement to retain the employees other than a portion of the loan must be repaid if not. Now Senate republicans are sneaking a total loan forgiveness for all into the next agreement.
I do not know of a single small business that wasnt satisfied with what they received and there are a lot of cases where companies paid back what they got out of embarrassment.
Looks as if those who kept their jobs and the small business forced to close were the real losers.

(804 posts)My daughter, a single mom, works from home. She gets no support from any state or government entity. She makes 49,000 a year for 2 people. She gets no child support. My granddaughter has been deemed disabled by social security but my daughter makes too much money to get help for her through SSI or Medicaid. Thus she has to pay insurance premiums, $40 each time she takes her to the doctor, 50 for an urgent care visit...you get the idea. People here in NM who receive unemployment are not only eligible for the $600 extra weekly payment, but also for Medicaid if they are left without health insurance due to job loss. I too, am all for helping those that lost jobs due to this pandemic. However, essential workers who are struggling, should get some consideration too. Heck, I personally know of people who are choosing NOT to return to work in order to continue the $2400 month extra. They say they have "health issues".
