Republican Rep. Ted Yoho on Saturday resigned from the board of the Christian anti-poverty organization Bread for the World days after he verbally attacked Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The non-profit announced that it "sought [Yoho's] resignation" after determining that his attack on Ocasio-Cortez didn't reflect "the values of respect and compassion that Jesus calls on us to exhibit every day."
Yoho approached Ocasio-Cortez on the steps of the Capitol building on Monday and called her "disgusting" and "out of [her] freaking mind," the congresswoman said. A reporter for The Hill heard Yoho refer to Ocasio-Cortez as a "f---ing b---h" as the two lawmakers parted ways.

(10,749 posts)I would hope similar organizations do the same with all prominent republicans whose values are not consistent with the teachings of their god or with basic hunan decency.

(22,756 posts)Bread for the World denounces the tragic killing of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and generations of Africans and their descendants in the United States and around the globe who have been devastated by unjust policing practices and violence rooted in a history of structural racism and inequity.
Committed to improving and protecting the lives of those who suffer from these atrocities globally, we affirm and are attentive to the lament and hopes of the African diaspora, then and now. We stand alongside all people of color who resist and are impacted by the evil of systems, structures, and relationships of racial inequity, violence, sustained injury, and trauma. We heed and lend our voice to the cry, Black Lives Matter, and unite in pioneering a timely response that honors and builds upon this historic lineage of resistance to such evil. We further call upon the Christian community to seize this teachable moment and rekindle our confession that all people are created in the image of God and that the love of God, justice, and mercy is for everyone, without exception. In so doing, we welcome the many voices of our member churches and networks who have led this confession in their statements and actions.
Still, we confess that statements and past actions are not enough. New and renewed acts of repentance, healing, and transformation are required of us. Therefore, we receive anew the biblical call to life, racial justice, healing, and transformation for ourselves and for others with deepened acts of conversion and repentance that can repair and heal our land. While Bread for the World has demonstrated a substantive commitment to this call in our advocacy agenda to end hunger and address poverty, we know more is required.....

(14,854 posts)and that's why they were so quick to dump him when the story came out. It seems they considered the claims of Rep. Ocasio-Cortez and the witness to be credible. Most likely, they tolerated him because it was valuable to them to have a Congressman on their board - right up until his behavior made headlines.

(14,854 posts)On July 23, they issued this statement:
Washington, D.C. Bread for the World today released the following statement regarding Rep. Ted Yohos verbal attack on Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez:
Bread for the World is deeply concerned about Rep. Ted Yohos verbal attack on Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and what we and others perceive to be his non-apology.
Bread for the World is concerned that his behavior in the past few days does not reflect the values of respect and compassion that Jesus calls on us to exhibit every day and we expect from our board members. Before we determine any further action, we have reached out to his office and have sought an opportunity to speak with him about the incident.

Then today, they released this update:
Washington, D.C. Bread for the World today released the following statement regarding Rep. Ted Yohos resignation from its Board of Directors:
As a bipartisan Christian organization committed to alleviating hunger and poverty through sound public policies, Bread for the World upholds the values of respect, dignity, and compassion that Jesus calls us to when engaging decision makers from across the political spectrum. We believe that Rep. Ted Yohos recent actions and words as reported in the media are not reflective of the ethical standards expected of members of our Board of Directors.
Bread for the World met with Rep. Yoho on Friday and he has resigned from the board of Bread. During that conversation, we reaffirmed our joint commitment to expanding opportunity for men, women, and children around the world and thanked Rep. Yoho for his commitment to foreign aid effectiveness and transparency. Despite these areas of agreement, Bread sought his resignation as an action that reaffirms our commitment to coming alongside women and people of color, nationally and globally, as they continue to lead us to a more racially inclusive and equitable world.
During this critical time in our nation in which millions depend on U.S. government leadership and improved public policies that center on those most impacted by the COVID-19 crisis, it is our hope and prayer that government leaders will find the moral courage and political will to foster healing and civil dialogue that leads to real structural change in our country and globally.
