The mayor is making a grave mistake in not removing the police chief.

(3,803 posts)Evidence shows Portland police working with federal officers at protests, contradicting city officials
Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler has repeatedly said the police force he oversees does not want or need the help of federal officers during nightly protests downtown.
But hours after Wheelers most recent public plea for federal agents to leave, Portland police advanced on protesters in a coordinated effort with federal officers. Friday wasnt the first time Portland police worked in tandem with federal officers. Portland police and federal officers marched shoulder-to-shoulder early Sunday morning to disperse protesters downtown.

Portland bans police from working with federal law enforcement, targeting journalists and legal observers during protests
Portland will immediately ban all police bureau members from cooperating with federal law enforcement or intentionally using force on or arresting journalists and legal observers, under new policies the City Council passed Wednesday.
Commissioner Chloe Eudaly, who crafted and introduced the last-minute resolutions, Commissioner Amanda Fritz, Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty and Mayor Ted Wheeler unanimously voted to approve the new rules, calling them necessary as President Donald Trump has refused to remove federal officers from the city.
Portlanders have taken to the streets for eight weeks to protest police brutality and systemic racism and have been met with force from city and federal officers leading to injuries, arrests and lawsuits.
The ban on coordinating with federal officers cites an unprecedented and unconstitutional abuse of power by the federal government as reason to discipline any Portland police member if they provide, request or willingly receive operational support from any agency or employee representing the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Marshal Service, Federal Protective Service, Customs and Border Protection or any other federal service while they are occupying the city.
I do not believe that the Portland Police Bureau will stop -- they are truly a despicable bunch of cretinous bullies.

It's been reported in Chicago that's who contacted DHS and invited them, although they have no authority to do that.
Bottom line is there's a lot of police chiefs in this country's cities that need to be fired and if mayors don't start doing that they will lose all their power. I think the mayor of Oakland has fired about a half dozen of them.
