Read an article about Hispanic field organizers are upset with the Biden campaign in Florida. From the article I gathered there is also a union dispute or something. How much of this is a real problem and how much if it is Union posturing? Not sure. They need to figure this out. We cant have nonsense going on like this in Florida especially now that we have a real shot to win. It really hurt us in 2016. Campaign are challenging organizations in the best of times much less in a pandemic but we cant have disputes from field organizers on the front lines. Biden needs to work this out and I am confident he will.

(32,579 posts)As for the Latino community in Florida, we need to realize that a good percentage are former Cuban refugees / emigres. They have a history of anti-liberal bias, and since the Bay of Pigs in 1960 they've mostly been hard GOP. Maybe that's changing now with Chump in charge, however it seems the former Cubans will always be suspicious of liberals. Amazingly other Latinos in Florida see the Democratic Party as their friend, and they know they are welcome under our big tent.

(32,641 posts)I must say, that is a very good question, said Biden, who was Vice President of the United States at the time. I have always found Puerto Ricos current political status as something very bizarre. My word of advice to you, and all Puerto Ricans, is that you continue to fight hard until you reach your goal of equality, and we shall act.
Is this a clear statement supporting statehood? Biden encouraged Puerto Ricans to continue to fight hard until the goal of equality is reached. At that point, Biden said, We shall act.
Was we in that case the White House? Congress actually makes the decision whether or not to admit a new state. Perhaps we meant the federal government as a whole.

(58,785 posts)for the Democratic Party's field organizers (yes, there is one) and the FL Democratic Party's Coordinated Campaign of Florida. "Suppressing the vote" turns out to mean moving some of the campaign's Spanish-speaking organizers to northern from central FL.
Here's the Miami Herald's coverage sparked by an "internal" letter leaked to them. There's a lot more to the article about the Hispanic vote, items addressed in the letter, continued problems with organizing, etc.
One big issue is that at least a handful of organizers were recently transferred from a heavily-Puerto Rican part of the state to counties with a small percentage of Hispanics. Four of five Spanish-speaking organizers along the I-4 corridor who were moved to North Florida were Puerto Rican, the letter says.
Field organizers add that input from staffers connected to Puerto Ricans living in Central Florida is often dismissed.
The [Coordinated Campaign of Florida] is suppressing the Hispanic vote by removing Spanish-speaking organizers from Central Florida without explanation, which fails to confront a system of white-dominated politics we are supposed to be working against as organizers of a progressive party."
A Democratic official familiar with internal discussions who asked not to be named said the letter comes amid negotiations between the Coordinated Campaign in Florida and the field organizers union, the IBEW Local 824. The official said organizers have not been updated on their individual assignments due to the ongoing union negotiations, which predate the letter. ...
Jackie Lee, Biden for President Florida state director, said in a statement the campaign has an open-door policy and its leadership in Florida is consulting with IBEW Local 824 on many of the issues discussed in the letter. The stakes of this election are critical, and we are committed to working with our organizers and Florida Democrats at every level in order to build a strong, successful Coordinated Campaign. Lee added that for the past six weeks, no staff are asked to move or relocate, either from out of state or within states....

(3,823 posts)The Biden campaign is not "suppressing the Hispanic vote"! It seems as if it's mostly a staffing and coordination of resources issue.
I hope they work out their issues soon and I'm confident that they will.
The impression given from the headline feeds the right wing Democrats in disarray theme that they love to push. While the article itself seems like it accurately reports the issue at hand the headline is extremely misleading.

(2,065 posts)The sentence in that article that said elections in FL are decided at the margins.
Over the past 25 years the GOP has effectively cut marginal losses among minorities. Rick Scott, most recently, courted the Puerto Rican community and cut his loss enough to eek out a victory.
They are also good at driving up their margins in white communities down the spine, in the Panhandle, and in ruby red SW FL.
Democrats are ineffective in this state in both ways. They dont know how to cut their margins in areas of weakness or drive up their margins in areas of strength.
So, the danger here is that Biden isnt driving up the margin in an area that should be a strong hold. Puerto Ricans, unlike Cuban Miami, in Orlando are Democrats. But we need to drive them up.
I have no idea whats going on here. But we need a strategy to drive up the Democratic vote in the I-4 corridor.
