Mother of victim killed at Austin protest says son was pushing fiancee's wheelchair before shooting
Other witnesses say victim was holding a rifle and approached the shooter before he was killed.

AUSTIN, Texas -- A Facebook Live broadcast of a protest march through downtown Austin late Saturday night captured the sound of multiple gunshots going off and people running in a panic.

One man died in the gunfire when he approached a vehicle, according to Austin police. "Good Morning America" identified the victim as Garrett Foster.

A witness told the Austin American-Statesman that a driver honked and sped toward protesters before opening fire. Foster was taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Foster was carrying a rifle, according to one witness. He approached the vehicle and was shot by the driver. The driver then drove away, witnesses said.

"GMA" spoke to Garrett's mother, Sheila Foster, who has a different account of what happened.

She said he had attended many peaceful protests with his fiancee Whitney Mitchell, a quadruple amputee. Sheila Foster said her son was pushing Mitchell's wheelchair moments before the shooting.

"And this gentleman got out of his car and started firing shots, and my son was shot three times," she said.

Reuters reported the deceased protestor carrying the rifle fired at the vehicle first, and the driver of the car returned fire with a handgun. https://www.google.com/amp/s/uk.mobile.reuters.com/article/amp/idUKKCN24R06G

“Initial reports indicate the suspect was carrying a rifle and shot at the victim, who was in his car, police told a briefing. The suspect has been detained, they said.”

Will have to see what Austin PD releases in the coming days, lots of conflicting accounts.

Texas considers ones’ vehicle an extension of their home as far as self defense so not a good idea to fire into someone’s car first there (or anywhere for that matter really).

There was a killing of a man in Detroit a couple weeks ago where the police were making an arrest for a previous drive by shooting murder. One of the individuals pulled out a handgun and shot several times at point blank range at the arresting officer, and was subsequently killed.

Word quickly spread in the community, resulting in a protest march, while the uncle of the deceased stated that his nephew had been just sitting on a porch when the police ran up and shot him in the back of the head for no reason. Even after the police released the video from the cops body cameras late that night, showing the entire incident, the uncle continued to stick to his original story saying his nephew was a hard working kid who never did anything wrong.
