(1,568 posts)... that it is additional money because of COVID. The regular unemployment might work but low income kids on school lunches now eat at home. They need to up it to at least $400.

(1,206 posts)The House has a bill and (soon) the Senate will have theirs and then they can negotiate a final outcome.
I think the amount will go up from the Republicans lowball offer but they will demand (and get) some stuff that they want (corporate liability protection) in order for it to happen.

(1,178 posts)The problem is GOP seems to think only people who don't vote for them are on unemployment. They don't seem to grasp the fact that many of the people that would vote for them are unemployed as well.

(19,060 posts)$200 is up from the $100 they had wanted. Dems are going to come down from $600. $400 would be an OK compromise IMO. Should stay at $600, but that's not going to be possible. Compromise to get something done to avoid disaster for millions and then make sure everyone knows who took their money.

(19,060 posts)I get it, coming down from $600 hurts me personally as my wife is collecting it right now, but there is also an argument to be made for paying people more than they would make if working being unproductive.
Lowering it isn't going to drive people back to work like the Reps think, and yes wages should be higher, but someone making $300 a week suddenly making $800 a week for not working isn't exactly easy to defend.
I predict $400, maybe $350.
Getting it done quickly though is very important.

(537 posts)They are claiming it will take up to 20 weeks to calculate a percentage of income, if that's what they choose to do instead of flat rate.
For myself I should think about a tent. If they base it off my income, how is it calculated? I make the majority of my income in certain months. Close to 60 grand May-Oct. Thats it. The rest is dribs and drabs. So if they calculate the benefit off a quarter it could be the quarter where there is no income but UE.
Ive banked the entire extra we were given, my job isn't coming back anytime soon. Tried to prepare for what lies ahead. I fear for those who do not have it so good. We are in for a nightmare in the coming months.

For those who live in Democratic States, chances are their UI in a ton higher than say Mississippi(213 max) or South Dakota( 240 +)or other Red Run States. So if some are receiving more than 70% of their weekly wages, chances are, they live in a progressive or liberal State. But,their cost of living is most likely higher.
So,if Donald Trump gets umteen Millions for his Business's,and have not seen any crabbing about it,then, those who might be getting a little extra will never get a gripe from me.

(11,915 posts)California is the state with the highest cost of living, other than Hawaii and DC. After California is New York and Oregon.
The maximum benefit in California is $450. Examples of states that pay more than California are ;
Massachusetts $823
Connecticut $650
North Dakota $647
Utah $560
Wyoming $508
Iowa $591
Oregon $648
For comparison, other higher cost of living states pay these amounts;
Hawaii $648
New York $504
D.C. $425

(34,661 posts)the disparities. Again,Cali cost of living as well as several other States are what they are and 450 ain't going to cut it. And that is the max. And most do not even come close to that number.
To me,the extra 600 is not out of line.
If Trump can steal, via Mnuchin, several million, then the Public deserves something extra.

(11,915 posts)any other times that they find themselves unemployed?
I was following up on your comment that higher cost of living states paid more. That isnt the case in many instances as I posted.
People went on unemployment all the time before the pandemic even started. Yet states somehow expected them to make it on an average of $372 a month. This is the first time I ever recall there being extra amounts given.
Most of the states need to improve how much they are paying. Even after this is over, unemployed people will still be getting $372 on average.
Wellstone ruled
(34,661 posts)ALEC? Well there is your answer to why UI in many States is so under serving.
BTW,Utah and 560 is for the 100k plus crowd, believe when we lived in Utah, the average was 250+. And it depended on which County you lived in also.

(9,263 posts)providing 13 week extension on unemployment based on the % of unemployment. Takes the basic 26 week benefit collection to 39 weeks. The ONLY people who would receive JUST $200/week are those who would have NEVER qualified for unemployment becasue they are 1099 workers or did not minimum wage earnings. I hate factual inaccuracies no matter who the source is.

If we were assured complete and total annihilation of the GOP in November (like the GOP losing so badly it can never recover), would you be willing to give up the $600 through November? The GOP is currently doing this to themselves.
I know I would. Yes it would be painful in the short term, but in the long term there could be some new changes in our government to prevent this kind of thing from ever happening again, like getting rid of the sick fucks like McConnell and Barr who are simply protecting the 1% and working against the average American. And getting rid of the electoral college that gave us Donald Trump despite him losing by 3 million votes. Paving the way for a better future for those who come after us.

(11,915 posts)While the unemployment federal $600 supplement has got all the attention recently, it is clear that state unemployment benefits are not adequate. The average state unemployment is $372 per week.
Regardless of the pandemic causing high unemployment, people unemployed for any reason at other times also need to pay their rent, utilities, cars, food and all other expenses.
During the 2009 Bush recession, I was unemployed for the entire year. Michigan had a max benefit of $362. While the number of weeks was extended several times, there was never any additional weekly amounts added. In my case the state paid only 23% of my former income.
Now here we are over 10 yrs later, and Michigan's max benefit is still only $362. IMO, the states need to seriously increase their own unemployment benefits on their own.
