Are commercially available laser pointers even capable of doing this, and if so why are they so commonly available? I read a post on DU last night which was explaining that you'd have to deliberately stare into a common laser pointer for some time to get any sort of damage. Anyone know about this?

At night, when the pupil is most open, the effects would bemagnified.

Still unclear from this article whether green lasers can cause permanent blindness. It's hard to believe it would when the simple remedy for a laser pointer is to look away or turn around.
