President Trump said in an interview broadcast Wednesday that he has not spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin about U.S. intelligence reports of Russian bounties given to Taliban-linked militants to kill U.S. and coalition forces in Afghanistan.
I have never discussed it with him, no, Trump said during a taping of Axios on HBO. He said he did not bring up the issue during his most recent conversation with Putin last week, which Trump said was a phone call to discuss other things.
The Trump administration in recent weeks has questioned the veracity of the intelligence. But some of Trumps own senior intelligence officials viewed the information as credible enough to warn the Pentagon and allies so they could ensure they had measures in place to protect their forces in Afghanistan and to begin developing options for responding to such a Russian operation, national security adviser Robert C. OBrien said earlier this month.
During the interview, Trump continued to cast doubt on the intelligence, saying, Frankly, thats an issue that many people said was fake news.

(16,869 posts)I think his answer speaks volumes.
When ask, he says "Well the call wasn't about that", then after rambling about the bounties being fake news and nuclear disarmament being more important than global warming, he says "I wasn't briefed on the subject". Essentially, Trump admitted that our troops being targeted weren't important enough to him to bring it up, and that he didn't believe the intelligence anyway, even though the intelligence was convincing enough to our intelligence teams to share it with other countries. He even says "well people are dying all over the world, as if that gives the bounties a pass.

(3,557 posts)I talked to a few trumpets in my family and their excuse was well, Im sure we do the same thing to Russian troops, like it was a two-wrongs-make-a-right sorta thing.
Russian bounties are a very blatant aggressive act against our nation.
