President Trump on Thursday suggested delaying the 2020 elections, something he does not have the power to do unilaterally, as he levied fresh attacks against mail-in voting.
"With Universal Mail-In Voting (not Absentee Voting, which is good), 2020 will be the most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT Election in history," Trump tweeted. "It will be a great embarrassment to the USA. Delay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely vote???"
Election Day takes place on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November, as determined by federal law. Moving the date would require an act of Congress.
Trump's tweet is likely to fuel concerns from critics and watchdogs who worry about the president attempting to undermine the legitimacy of the 2020 election. In an interview earlier this month with "Fox News Sunday," Trump would not commit to accepting the results of November's election.

Trump is engaging in wishful thinking.

(10,039 posts)What happens if Republican Governors go along with this charade and "delay" their polling? You need to put yourself in their shoes rather than counting on a rule-of-law they have not followed and have no intention of following. They could tie this up in the courts for a year thereby... wait for it... effectively delaying the election.

No imagination is required to understand that.

(10,303 posts)Election could be delayed but not for long. And it's also a states rights thing with elections - so if some do delay per DJT and some don't per their guvn'rs this could get messy. Could we be looking at a President Pelosi before a President Biden?
