Adapting to Reality Is a Positive Action

When faced with a dilemma at at time when one does not have the tools to accomplish something, it is often necessary to adapt to the situation and find an alternative way to accomplish what you want. That applies pretty much to all aspects of life, from politics to practical solutions to other kinds of problems.

Politically, we are faced with trying to get rid of our current head of state, who appears to be unwilling to leave office at the end of his term. As individuals, we do not possess the power to remove him from office. Collectively, however, we have that power. On November 3, we can go to the polls and we can also convince others to do the same. In most states, it is possible to vote earlier than November 3, so we can do that, if we choose. We cannot act as individuals in any other way to accomplish that important goal, so we must adapt to the situation and find ways to increase the turnout for our November election.

Similarly, I purchased a rain gauge from Amazon recently. I wanted to install it in a line post on the chain link fence in my back yard, which is away from all structures and trees, and it is located where it will be convenient for me to check after a rain. I searched for a rain gauge that was designed to be installed on a chain link fence line post, but found none that were so designed.

Did I give up? I did not. Instead, I purchased on that was designed with a bracket that could be attached to a wood post with screws. At the time, I thought that I had some stainless steel, self-drilling, self-tapping machine screws. Today, though, when I looked for those screws, i could not find them. I must have discarded them when I cleaned up the garage. That was a setback in my plans. I could have driven to the hardware store and purchased some more of them, but I didn't want to bother with that today.

Did I give up? I did not. I looked around in my garage, and found a couple of 2" stainless steel, worm-drive hose clamps. I unscrewed those and released the clamp band from the worm drive. Then, I used those hose clamps to attach the bracket to my chain link line post. I checked the level of the bracket, and then tightened the clamps securely and inserted the gauge itself in the bracket.

Job done. And done in even less time than it would have taken me to use those self-drilling, self-tapping machine screws I could not find. I found an alternative method to accomplish my goal, and now have a nice, neat rain gauge, which I will check on Saturday after the rain that is predicted.

Please vote in November, and take others with you to vote. We will replace Donald Trump in our own way. We have the means to do so, collectively, if not individually.

A rather elegant solution to many issues like this. My "Green Thumb Mom" uses them to fasten her "trellising" together, as needed. They are all over my race car, doing things very much in the vein of MM's raingage mount.

You can fasten almost anything to anything with them, and quite securely, too. Besides, they don't corrode, and you can easily disassemble what you have fastened together at any time. Zip ties, too, are quite useful in similar situations. If I had seen my collection of zip ties first, I might have used them for the rain gauge installation. Too late, now, though. The hose clamps are in place.

be negative/unproductive which we see in the extremes of mass killings and tRUMP's tweets...

We all make choices and not always good ones...

I can do nothing about Trump's tweets, however, nor about whatever mass killings you are referring to. Because there is no useful action I can take with regard to those things, I move on to other things where actions have a chance of producing results.

I cannot, for example, do a damned thing about the COVID-19 pandemic, except to take all precautions not to get infected and to not pass it on if I do. So, I choose to work to defeat Trump in November, since I can, perhaps convince more people to go and vote.

If you have any ideas about other actions that can produce actual results, please share them.
