Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsW gave a nice eulogy for John Lewis, but that doesn't make up for his awful record on voting rights.
I'll be the first to admit that W seems to have become a genuinely decent human being in his post-Presidency. And he obviously looks like Lincoln compared to Trump. But none of that should absolve him from what was a godawful record on voting rights, which included nominating Hans von Spakovsky to the FEC. He also appointed the two Supreme Court justices that were the decisive votes to gut the Voting Rights Act (with Roberts writing the opinion). And all of that may pale in comparison to the fact that he likely committed war crimes in Iraq and in connection with state-sponsored torture.
Again, I don't blame anyone for getting warm feelings about him when you contrast him with where the GOP is today (I'll admit to having the same feelings on an involuntary basis), but that shouldn't change anything about his legacy. Ever.

(11,256 posts)Him joining the re-enactment of the march across the Edmund Pettis Bridge was pretty powerful. And I definitely agree that he seems to naturally talk like a Democrat now that he isn't running for office again (and won't personally benefit from voter suppression).
