Supervisors recommend rejection of NASA effort to have field lab declared cultural site

The Ventura County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday recommended the state reject a proposal by NASA to have the entire contaminated Santa Susana Field Laboratory designated a cultural district.

In a letter it approved to the state Office of Historic Preservation, the board expressed concerns that such a designation could undermine the long-planned cleanup of the 2,850-acre site outside Simi Valley.

"The board opposes any nomination that conflicts with public health, safety and general welfare to the extent the nomination impairs or impedes the legally mandated cleanup efforts," the board's letter states.

"The board recommends that OHP reject the nomination at this time," the letter states.

The preservation office's Historical Resources Commission is scheduled to consider NASA's proposal at its Aug. 14 meeting.
