Coronavirus makes a comeback around the worldJapan, Israel, Lebanon and Hong Kong are among dozens of places reporting record numbers of new cases in recent days, many weeks after they had crushed the curve of infections, reopened their economies and moved on.
And in some countries that had brought numbers down, notably in Europe, the reopening of borders, bars and nightclubs is being blamed for a small but noticeable increase in cases.
In Belgium and Spain, the number of daily infections has surpassed levels not seen since early May, prompting authorities to reimpose some recently lifted restrictions.
A lot of countries that were said to have beaten the virus did no such thing. They just shut everything down. That's the easy part; the hard part is when you re-open. Many countries, other than the US, are now struggling with the same problem. We have definitely handled it poorly, but I don't think it's accurate to say other countries have this thing licked. There are still some countries that have a handle on it, but many are struggling just like we are.

(13,582 posts)a possibility that we could be the country to get it under control and keep it down. It doesn't work that way with Trump in charge.

(9,998 posts)They lowered and flattened the curve significantly, so now they simply have to impose restrictions to quell any outbreak.
We stopped weeks before we should have, and never got the curve low, so it was much easier for things to resume accelerating upwards, which is exactly what is happening now.
Comparing the outbreaks in these other countries to the U.S. is folly. We're in a Much worse position than they are.

(63,221 posts)I think with all the openings and with the possible school re-openings, we are going to have a terrible second wave which will coincide with flu season. I would be prepared to stay home for the rest of the calendar year if I could, but we are supposed to go back to work on an alternating week schedule beginning on Monday.
I have a meeting with my manager (on the phone) tomorrow and I am going to see if there is any way around it since it is technically voluntary. I'll have to gauge his reaction. He is one of those people who does not like staying at home with his family in his hair, because he is an extrovert who loves the office buzz and he doesn't like his family distracting him.
I am the opposite. I can't stand the noise and distractions of being in the office, and having to get up earlier, getting ready and commuting in (very short commute, but still, there is nothing like waking up 15 minutes before you have to start and turning on your laptop, and "Voila!" you are at work!).
Also, there is the added risk of being around that many people and the added expense of just leaving the apartment. I am not getting on the subway, so I am planning to Uber/Lyft into work 4 days per week every other week. I still get one wfh day every week when I am working and we get every other week to wfh. I don't think I will be able to expense it since it's my choice and most people drive (we have free parking), but it's worth it to me to have that peace of mind.
