Experts dismiss Trump claim that it could take 'years' to declare election winner

President Trump on Thursday suggested it could take "years" to determine the winner of the upcoming presidential race, marking the latest in a series of election-related statements that experts dismissed as a legal or practical impossibility.

Trump's comment came at a Thursday afternoon White House briefing just hours after he took to Twitter to suggest the Nov. 3 contest be delayed and insist that definitive results be made available on the night of the election.

"For so many years, I've been watching elections and they say the projected winner or the winner of the election," Trump told White House reporters. "I don't want to see that take place in a week after November 3, or a month or, frankly, with litigation and everything else that can happen, years."

But none of Trump's claims Thursday about the election timeline stand up to scrutiny, election law experts told The Hill.

While it may take longer than normal to determine this year's outcome given the higher volume of expected absentee ballots, the process should not take longer than a month, according to Edward Foley, a law professor at Ohio State University.

... the fact that Trump can't count beyond 20.

Therefore, he can't imagine millions of votes being counted in less than "years".

Nothing like putting your game plan right out in the open.

So we know he's already planning to sue, and the reasons will be frivolous. I don't see how that prevents Joe Biden from being sworn in.

I think even if the election gets thrown into the House, Biden will win. Except for a few crazies, I think a lot of Republicans are done with Trump. They would prefer that he goes away.

I still wouldn't be surprised if someone else ends up as the Republican nominee. His numbers are horrible. I don't think at this point they'll improve. There just isn't time. By not running, he prevents himself from losing.

He does have the legal problems in New York. I think that can be settled with a fine that he agrees to pay (which we all know he never will).
