CV's R0 is unaffected by and independent of the # of daily cases

"Opening things up" leads to R0>1, which leads to daily new cases increasing (by R0x each day). I've probably read a hundred articles the past month where someone (a man on the street, a gov't official, a reporter) says something to the effect that "gee, our rate of descent was greatly slowed down to a very safe level when we had our parachute out. I just don't understand what's been happening after jettisoning the chute."

When they reopened. At that point there were 80-85 new cases daily.

Clueless what the RO is now, but 350-700 cases daily reported now.

Snip

The primary purpose of a shutdown was to flatten the curve, ensure sufficient hospital capacity, and develop effective treatments and therapies to reduce mortality. And we’ve done that. But it can come rearing back when you least suspect it.

We did the right thing initially. We saved millions of lives, what we did. We did the right thing. But a permanent shutdown would no longer be the answer at all. A small shutdown of certain areas — but we don’t want to do that — small shutdowns can be very helpful, but not for long periods of time.

Bottom line is, there’s no plan to do anything.
