https://news.yahoo.com/these-are-the-13-states-that-need-to-lock-down-now-according-to-harvard-coronavirus-experts-162201179.htmlA report released this week by the Trump administrations coronavirus task force warns that 21 states are now in the red zone and need to take aggressive steps to slow the spread of COVID-19.
That sounds serious. But according to new, comprehensive national guidelines from a network of research, policy and public-health experts convened by Harvard Universitys Global Health Institute and Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics, the latest federal report probably isnt serious enough.
Why? Because the steps it recommends may be too weak to suppress the virus, and the threshold at which it recommends them may be too high.
The Trump task force, for instance, doesnt advise authorities to issue stay-at-home orders anywhere. But if the Harvard experts had their way, 13 states would lock down right now. Another 22 would be considering lockdowns.

In contrast, the Harvard group says that at the red level, jurisdictions have reached a tipping point for uncontrolled spread and will require the use of stay-at-home orders and/or advisories to mitigate the disease.
Right now, that would mean 13 of the Trump task forces 21 red-zone states returning to lockdown: Florida (with a staggering 48.1 new daily cases per 100,000 people), Louisiana (46.2), Mississippi (43.5), Alabama (39.1), Arizona (36.6), Tennessee (34.1), Georgia (33.8), Nevada (33.0), South Carolina (30.1), Texas (27.9), Idaho (27.5), Arkansas (26.4) and Oklahoma (25.6).

Not only will Oklahoma Governor Stitt not order a full lockdown, he is pushing for schools to reopen.

The other eight task force red-zone states California (23.5), Missouri (22.0), North Dakota (18.2), North Carolina (18.1), Utah (17.9), Iowa (16.3), Wisconsin (15.7) and Kansas (14.2) would fall into Harvards orange zone.
Notice how red they are? One exception is California. So as always under him, its going to get worse. I know some are starting to trend blue, but the current representation of them is red.

(14,642 posts)but at least here in TN, except that some counties now have a mask mandate, little will change. Schools are opening. This will be my daughter's first semester of teaching full-time at a university and will have to do most of it in person. I'm beyond upset about it.
I mean, if it was bad enough after Spring Break to send everyone home, who the fuck thinks it's ok to keep things open now? I've been tracking it since March 10 and can tell you that the numbers are increasing very fast.
I rarely leave the house and yard. My husband does the grocery shopping wearing mask and gloves and I wash everything when it comes into the house We're trying hard to be careful. Still, I will be surprised if it's enough when so many other people are acting like it's no big deal.

(21,596 posts)We are so screwed. AL (!) has a mask mandate, but FL, TN & SC dont.
Public and private K-12 schools, colleges, and university are going to reopen for in-person classes in many Georgia communities starting in August.
Thankfully, our local school district will be having classes online. However, teachers will be teaching from their classrooms.
