(32,005 posts)Never shuts up and talks with his hands. He wouldn't sit still with an IV in his hand, it would end up being a total waste of time. They might have drawn from the hand because his AC was blown or something. Does look like he's on a blood thinner.

(13,849 posts)A phlebotomist will take it wherever he/she can get it from me.

(4,772 posts)My veins are tiny, deep and roll.
Phlebotomist usually can find a spot on my arm - the only time I've had venipuncture on my hand is for IV.
I take Warfarin and a good technician can stick me without leaving a bruise. Usually if I'm having a procedure, the anesthesiologist is called in to insert the IV shunt. Interestingly, they try to avoid my hand.
I have had arrogant technicians who scoff at my warning and blow through my veins.
Ii must say though that I've learned to hydrate very well hours before the procedure and keep my arms covered and warm.
I think Trump is too arrogant to take these precautions.

(28,705 posts)I was in the hospital last weekend. They needed blood and found a vein in my hand, and drew from there. It hurt, too, and it left me with a huge bruise.
It was the first time anyone ever drew from my hand, but IVs in one arm, and the other arm badly bruised, he decided to draw from the hand.

(33,082 posts)Also, he may be on a blood thinner. My husband and I both take blood thinners. My husband must have thinner skin than I. He is always bruised from the blood thinners. I don't bruise nearly as much.
He may have had an IV inserted there, or a blood draw. I have gotten some wicked bruises from having blood drawn. Nurses are usually lousy at drawing blood. Phlebotomists do better.
I know we love to speculate about his health. He is so nasty, he may outlive us all.

(131,209 posts)My dad's hands looked like that all the time from blood thinners, without any injections or infusions. The skin on the back of one's hands is quite thin, especially older people's, and it bruises very easily if they are taking those drugs.

(131,209 posts)It's just a possible effect. My dad's hands looked exactly like that, maybe worse, and the doctor said it was a common result of taking some blood thinners like coumadin. https://www.uofmhealth.org/health-library/bruse

(24,433 posts)Shes pushing 78 and in and out of the hospital for one thing or another. Gets blood clots in her legs and takes blood thinners. Her hand looks just like that after a couple needle sticks.
Ms. Toad
(38,817 posts)Slight bangs leave massive bruises, and when I was on heparin (either IV or subcutaneous), needle sticks can cause massive bruising.
The bruising wasn't as bad once I transitioned to Coumadin.

(11,450 posts)especially with people with lighter skin tones. I had surgery in March, and the bruises from the IVs they used were visible until the end of May.
All the blood draws I've had were from the elbow. IMHO -and I am by means an expert - he got this during that mysterious visit to Walter Reed some time ago.
