A school in Indiana is regretting the decision to have students physically attend class after the coronavirus caused the need to quarantine students within hours of school starting. The panic was started when it was reported that a student who had attended multiple classes at Greenfield-Central Junior High School was confirmed to be infected with the virus. The school immediately quarantined the infected student and everyone he was believed to have contact with for 14 days. It is not clear if the student passed the infection on to anyone else at the school.
Harold E. Olin, superintendent of the Greenfield-Central Community School Corporation was both surprised and not surprised at what happened. He said, We knew it was a when not if. He added that he was very shocked it was on Day 1.
Many other school districts want to avoid what happened in Indiana and have decided not to attempt in-person classes, but those who are staying the course are getting there schools ready to deal with infections as they are almost guaranteed to happen.
Many schools and universities have been fighting against the push to reopen schools, but the Trump administration and his Education Department are adamant that schools should reopen for the new school year. The push to reopen continues as the death toll from the virus has surpassed 150,000 and everyone from parents to teachers protests risking the lives of students. One school district near Houston Texas voted to postpone their reopening until September due to the rise in infections in that state.
