Washington teen found in woods 8 days after going missing

Source: ABC news

An 18-year-old who went missing on July 24 has been found eight days later in the heavily wooded Cascade Mountains east of Seattle in what rescuers are calling a "miracle."

Giovanna "Gia" Fuda went missing last Friday after last being seen on surveillance footage at a coffee shop in Index, Washington. Her car was found out of gas on Highway 2 the next day between Skykomish and Steven's Pass in extremely mountainous terrain. But after more than a week of searching, the authorities had turned up very little until Saturday.

"We are absolutely thrilled to know that search and rescue located her alive," Sgt. Ryan Abbott, with the King County Sheriff's Office, said at a press conference Saturday evening. "She's in stable condition. She is with her parents and being transported to a local hospital."

Search and rescuers came across a notebook that belonged to Fuda along a stream deep in the woods off Highway 2 at about 2:45 p.m. local time, Abbott said. The crew followed the stream and eventually came across clothes and shoes belonging to Fuda. The searchers kept following the creek up a steep embankment and found her 2 miles from the bottom of the ravine.

but it was locked because the story is more than 12 hours old. I just wanted to find out what some DUers thought about how she ended up in the woods.

What do they tell you to do when you're lost? First rule--STAY PUT!

Okay--what do you do while you're "staying put"? Of course--break out the cards and play solitaire!
Do that, and I'll guarantee you, in FIVE MINUTES, someone will be looking over your shoulder and say, "Put the red eight on the black nine"--and you're FOUND!!

Very glad they found her and that she's okay!

Clearly I don't know all the details here, but ...

Rule #1, don't leave your vehicle. (with some very, very rare exceptions)

“I think she was on a wild chase to find some coffee shops, and she completely thought she was going to North Bend, and she got a little turned around,” Kristin Fuda said.

Concerned about staying on a section of highway with no cell service after her car ran out of gas, Gia Fuda locked the doors and took only a small bag with her journal and Bible.

“She was looking for the bridge that goes into Skykomish. But little did she know that was down the road, way down the road, and on the other side,” Bob Fuda said.

Hoping to find a trail to the bridge, she headed into dense woods and got lost in rugged terrain.

I don't know about this - she was on the wrong pass (Snoqualmie Pass is 4 to 6 lanes the whole way and Stevens Pass - the one she was on - is 2 lanes the whole way). I don't think it was a good idea to head into dense woods in any case.

I think I got lost in that area once. I was 9 and we were at a rest stop. I decided to take a quick trail into the woods just to look around and before I knew it I was lost. I started yelling and I don't think they even heard me. My dad finally went into the woods and found me. And what was weird: I was on the right path and everything. The trail was probably no more than a 1/2 mile loop (I'm guessing it was closer to a 1/4 mile) and it appears that I was going in the right direction.

I was kinda young to be setting landmarks and I wasn't familiar with the area, but still....it was really weird...

1965, it was a very idyllic spot at the road entrance. I did not know there was a huge waterfall not about 1/3 mile from the road!
I could have gotten in real trouble if I had really gotten lost! Yes, that picnic area was deceiving..LOL

We were moving from Seattle to NJ and I have not been to the area in over 55 years.

Trails in the Olympic National park...they call this the EverGreen state for a reason.
Of course all the signs warning against bears keeps you close to the trail....
