DU got it first. The 'paper finally published my letter of 07-15.

Funny how the local crazed wingnut gets at least weekly space, sometimes a couple of times. (Yea, I realize he writes that many.) Here 'tis:

*************

It was said of JFK, “Johnny, we hardly knew ye.” Today’s difference is that we have known way too much about Donald J. Trump from Day 1, more than we ever wanted to know or invited into our lives, and he will be the most surprised of anybody when he realizes how soon and fast the country will completely wipe out all memory of him.

Since that escalator descent and initial shock of his racism, it has been a daily barrage of jaw-dropping incredulity for us. We’ve been through all stages of: Let’s understand him; let’s see him grow and change; let’s see the wider world open his awareness and his heart. And we who knew who and what he was from Day 1 launched into the daily game of Ain’t-It-Awful, trading his latest verbal atrocity and diagnoses, and just attacking.

What kind of person would insult Gold Star parents, veterans in general, and any people of integrity, honor, accomplishments, dragging down anybody whom he looks bad next to? Nothing worked against him because there was no need to be complicated — just no norms, all publicity stunts, and cutthroat tactics. But we are pulling out of this morass and he will be gone. Even his diehard supporters will eventually be rid of him and will be as happy as everybody else.

Both parties used to sort of believe what each said it stood for and what the other one was about. Well, the Republican Party has forfeited absolutely all pretense it has ever claimed to patriotism, veterans support, family values, pro-life, small government, character-matters, and all moral equities.

I don’t care about polls, strategies to fight him or what character assassinations he will unleash. But most of all, I won’t count on his losing in November.

Besides, English teachers aren't your audience. Editors usually let vernacular run in letters. ancianita Aug 2020 #10

And so are all his republican enablers in the senate. The Blue is stronger than 2016. And trump voters know what an asshole he is,
so there's that. Good letter.

The Blue Wave will be a tsunami. We mustn’t second guess our own rational thinking. He didn’t become President fair and square. He needed as much corruption, lies and underhanded machinations as what actually happened. His Presidency is a grand lie.

That’s what we need to fight against. We have to keep our eye on the real enemy. The one hiding behind that cloak of deception. Trump is nothing more than a useful tool. A man so utterly devoid of simple humanity that he’s truly alien to us. He gets his marching orders from Putin. Why else would he have so many phone conversations with him? Are we so simpleminded that we think those calls are to further Democracy, human rights, and genuine friendship between two nations? If we’re that stupid and so easily led down the proverbial garden path, then we’re incapable of stopping them.

More and more I suspect we have a Russian plant right in the White House. Trump is too stupid even for Putin to believe he can trust him. Trump can’t be trusted to carry out even simple instructions. He needs 24/7/365 monitoring because he’s capable of destroying even carefully rehearsed actions.

Yeah, I went there. Trump is no mastermind. He failed at everything he ever tried. He needs a daddy to bail him out so he can keep failing. Right now Putin is that daddy.

I wrote, purposely in my fluid grammar, "dragging down anybody that he looks bad next to?" I knew what I was doing, first from basic studies and then from a useless advanced degree in English (Literature), that the erstwhile grammatical decree was not-end-preposition - and by the '70s such "Prescriptive Grammar" was tossed out in favor of "Deep Structure/Meaning."

So the newspaper people still cling to the Olde ways, here making no other change than to insert the clunky "whom"!1

"anybody whom he looks bad next to?"

It actually sounds clumsy to write it their way. Don’t they know that if they’re posting something someone else wrote they should post how that person wrote it? I thought that was more acceptable than correcting it.

It was probably one person who suffers from OCD. I used to work with one and they’re totally anal!

No honest reader can detect any political "tone" in your letter.

I'm convinced that the local level is where clear thinking and objective voices sway Republican locals away from their blind acceptance of their current politics.

If you changed even one vote, you've proven that Democratic Party values cannot be canceled out by Republican lies or even habits of mind.

I'm so pleased to have read this. Thank you.
