Because she has experience in the Obama Administration. She was the National Security Adviser and knows foreign policy like the back of her hand. She is not afraid of Putin.
Also, she is a safe pick for the establishment Democrats advising Biden, in case someone has to take over for Biden before his term is complete. That is something they have to consider.
Susan Rice is the logical choice, in my opinion.
However...
However, Kamala Harris is relentless when she goes on the attack. She could take over the Presidency, if required, just as all the other possible nominees. Kamala would be the second choice in my opinion.

(102,226 posts)promoted by RW memes (e.g., Benghazi for starters) and can be the firebrand that we really need. That said, I DO like Rice. Biden needs someone with whom he has a strong comfort level once he's in the WH, but I'm reminded that he MENTORED Harris. Harris, to me, is the one most likely to help get Biden to the WH.
so.
I also like Rice for all her foreign policy experience, but think Harris would be a better public face for the administration and I can picture her as president one day. Rice is a quieter, more subdued person and though highly competent, she may not have broad appeal with voters. Of course, we know republicans will bring up Benghazi again, although she was at fault for absolutely nothing.
If Biden and Harris can work well together, I think it is a good match. Of course, only Joe knows who is the best fit for him.

(56,828 posts)and, I hope she gets Secretary of State if she's not VP. My concern with Rice is that she has zero experience running for elected office.

(1,184 posts)Rice is PERFECT for a Secretary of State role.
No one has yet to see Rice in a debate or campaign mode. Big risk to reward ratio.

(11,606 posts)Harris lost her chance in the debate no matter what anyone says. I felt it then and I feel it now. I'm good with either but Rice is the best candidate.

(7,733 posts)So, I dont think Susan Rice has any special qualifications there. Kamala Harris is more progressive, IMO also, and we need a progressive team to get a full array of voters to the polls. I dont think Senator Harris is afraid of Putin either. I would prefer Kamala Harris.

(86,558 posts)good working relationship with Biden, has for years. Her relationship with Joe is much like the one Joe shares with Pres. Obama and I think that's what he'd be most comfortable with.
Aside from all her professional qualifications, that is important too. It takes a special kind of person, as we saw with Amb. Marie Yovanovitch, to be a top level Ambassador as Susan Rice was as well as NS Advisor.
Her demeanor is calm and professional, well reasoned and reasonable.
I hope he chooses her.

(50,985 posts)Kamala is on the Senate Intel Committee which I find impressive.
I also like Harris's experience in law enforcement. She's perfect for the times we're in, when it comes to navigating the difficult path to dealing with police brutality.
Kamala has also run for national office and has proven to be an excellent debater and one who can 'prosecute' Trump and Co. in the public eye.
I think Harris has a warmth that Rice does not. Not that this is necessary but Biden and Obama also have this quality.
Rice is my second choice, however.
Thanks for opening discussion.

(2,475 posts)Joe said one term pretty much, so the VP will be the likely candidate going into '24. They have to be thinking about who might be best positioned and qualified for that.

(2,475 posts)Apparently his campaign aides said this back late last year and though Joe remains non-committal he alluded to the fact that he will be 82 and running again is an unknown. This puts an extra emphasis on his VP choice.

(2,113 posts)I'd rather see Kamala as AG. We are in serious need of someone who's a pitbull in that position. IMO, she'd be perfect there. I don't really think she brings much to the table for VP.
Bottom line, though, is that I'm voting for Joe. He could pick a rutabaga as a running mate and he'd still have my vote.

(14,565 posts)I've seen it expressed otherwise in this thread but I can't agree. The smart reserved charming types always won over the debate watchers in my living room, while the female pit bull types did not.
I think Biden wants to pick Susan Rice. I think this would be an extremely simple decision for him, minus her appearances on those Sunday talk shows regarding Benghazi. He knows those clips would show up prominently. I think the lengthy delay in making this decision is caused by internal debate, and debate by Biden himself, toward how much weight to give that aspect as opposed to simply picking the best candidate and one you are most comfortable with, in confidence that it will work out.

(2,227 posts)Biden would get a lot more bang for his buck, with Harris.
But Rice is the old democratic establishment, as is he. Biden can represent returning to normalcy, but his VP pick needs to take the NEW party in a NEW direction. Everything, including and especially the 2018 mid term election, indicates a broad based desire for a NEW direction.
Choosing Rice will NOT indicate the he is ready to move forward, but is, rather, trying to maintain control by the establishment dems. They brought us to where we are at right now, we don't need more of the same. She IS more of the same.
Just because he has worked with her doesn't mean she is the best choice for the party. Sure, she can do the job. But I think that, at best, he sees her as "safe". We don't need "safe", we need aggressive, innovative, creative, a fighter. Someone who can represent a new way, a new direction, a new outlook, a new philosophy. Since this is a time of MAJOR political change, we should make the most of it, both nationally, and globally. Harris is exciting, indicating a bold new direction. Rice doesn't do that.
Rice will help keep the voters of the past, but we already have them. Young people, who we are counting on BIGLY, want the party to actually show it is ready to move forward. Again, Rice doesn't do that.
I will support his choice, but I could get behind Rice as VP more enthusiastically if he appoints Harris AG, with full power to go after the bastards. All of them. Every single one of them. I think she would do so, with gusto.
Hopefully his choice won't make a difference. Hopefully. I suppose we'll have to wait and see.... IF we are allowed to vote, and if ALL the votes are counted, and IF the votes aren't tampered with, and IF........

(32,685 posts)Also, I think that Kamala really broke his heart that night in the debate. Maybe the delay is due to him not wanting to pick KH despite his team urging him to?

(19,953 posts)listening to the Pod Save America discussion with Dan and Ben. My concern over what the Republicans would do with the whole Benghazi shit, was my biggest issue, but as they said, her only involvement was to be pushed to go on the Sunday shows to defend the administration's position (when she shouldn't have been). Outside of that, her ability to hit the ground running in trying to resurrect America's reputation amongst US allies, will be vital.
