(21,204 posts)HORRORS! Of course, most low income housing is built in areas that have public transportation. No buses, no low income housing more often than not.
Having lived in older complexes and even a rooming house that had a rainbow of tenants, I know that the "quality" of low income housing is TOTALLY dependent on the management. Places that are managed well are fine. Places that aren't can be pretty bad, regardless of the color of the tenants.
Trump's comment was pretty rich considering the wealth he inherited came from his father being a slumlord.

Awsi Dooger
(14,565 posts)He's saying the consensus estimate is 35% minorities in the suburbs but he prefers to use 30+% as his estimate.
He's not saying he wants to cut it from 35% now to 30% later. For whatever reason he seems to think he'll "get in trouble" by referencing the 35% official estimate. Maybe his own base doesn't want to believe it is that high.
IronLionZion
(51,268 posts)by counting Middle Eastern and North African people as white. And they deliberately undercount Latinos. They want to convince their voters that America is whiter than it is.
They've also completely ignored the effects of gentrification where cities have gotten more expensive and suburbs are simply more affordable for many types of people to live in.

This is a blatant misinterpretation of what he said. I don't mind pointing it out. Frankly it is incompetent that it required so deep into the thread. Once I watched the clip I thought it would be corrected within the first 5 to 10 posts.
In my early years here that would have happened

(10,578 posts)I noticed that too after googling Trump suburbia and watching his comments on a Twitter video.
I put up my post on this thread before I had done that research. Since all I said was "He is such a bastard. (eom)" I see no need to edit my message, since it still hold true, including as it applies to his actually comments on suburbia.
Awsi Dooger
(14,565 posts)The section where Trump says, "You want something where people can aspire to be there..."
That's where he is obviously implying that it's less desirable to be in suburbia, given such high percentage of minorities. He can pretend he's referring to Biden damaging the suburbs but his base darn sure is focusing on the other aspect, the 30-35% already there.
IMO, that section should have been the focus of the condemnation. The reporter Yamiche Alcindor did a very poor job in the twitter quote because it was posed as a direct quote when it was a slightly altered quote or not full context quote that changed the meaning dramatically. That's what people were reacting to, the words without seeing the video.
As a handicapper I always look for the key variable. In this situation it was simple: The usage of "I" instead of "I'd" in the twitter quote. That immediately jumped out to me as meaning a current estimate and not a future goal. Sure enough, once I looked at the video it was blatant.
There are many twitter replies pointing out the same thing. The strange aspect is why Trump has any reason to believe he is better off using 30+% and not the 35%.
Regardless, I don't mind being challenged on things, particularly interpretive ones. I tend to fare well.
And your "bastard" summary works perfect no matter the day, hour or topic.

(4,131 posts)We have a responsibility to truth and accuracy - it is one of the pillars of our party that stand to separate us from Trump and the GOP.
Trump did not say he wanted to reduce the numbers of minorities in the suburbs. He said when he estimates the percentage of minorities he reduces that estimate from 35% to 30% because he doesnt want to be accused of over representation by the media.
Most of what Trump does and says is easily explained: Trump is an idiot. This instance is no different.

(1,664 posts)Thank you for saying so. And the fact that the first reply was that you were "carrying Trump's water" is sad. And there are dozens of posts after yours that still incorrectly reference the remark. Don't people read?
Donald Trump does enough to disqualify himself without us taking things out of context, and I applaud people who still care about getting things right. I often see people on DU make points such as yours and get destroyed over it, as if you are defending the guy.
DU can be a wonderful haven for great discussions, and then there are times it's... intellectually dead.

(6,309 posts)He did not say keep minorities out. He said keep low income housing out.
He said that 30% of suburbia is minorities, as if to say it's not just white people who want to keep low income housing out. He is suggesting that minorities worked hard to achieve the American Dream of living in suburbia and won't want to see it destroyed by the "invasion" of low income housing.
What he said about "keep it lower" is about whether he is misquoting the statistic.
Someone posted the video, and I watched it, because I couldn't believe it.
He's stupid, but he's not that stupid.
Let me rephrase that - this is the man who suggested drinking Clorox. Sometimes he IS that stupid. But people are misinterpreting what he said on this one.

(3,921 posts)nobody would use the phrase 'cut it to 30%' when wondering what number to quote. they would just say 'about 30%' or '30 to 35%'.
imo his answer is deliberately ambiguous to appeal to the soccer moms (see, i'm also protecting minority home owners in the suburbs from the 'invasion') and his deplorables (see, i want to limit/reduce the amount of minorities in suburbs).

(6,299 posts)Theyll never admit it, but, Trumps words call to deep seated beliefs that white America has. They understand what hes talking about even if they know its wrong - they dont want minorities in their suburbs, invading where they dont belong.
Thats part of the reason the police keep killing black people. White Americans have been subtly indoctrinated their whole life that black people are inferior and dangerous. There is the default American - white men, and the rest who are deviations away from the default. This is the result of institutional and generational racism.
Trump is speaking to this racism, that more minorities in suburbs = a degraded American way of life. Hes subtly creating a forced war between white people and minorities, much like the Nazis invented the Jewish problem. He is trying to cross party lines and say to Democratic and undecided voters, you may not like me, but those undesirable MINORITIES are coming for your neighborhood!
I wish I could be optimistic, but 2016 shows how irrational voters can be, and how easily they can be swept up by racist and Fascistic rhetoric. I really hope Im wrong.

(14,565 posts)If Trump had actually said it that way, this would have been the lead story on all the political talk shows last night. It would have been mega outrageous even by his standards. The programs would have dumped whatever they had planned, in favor of this.
None of that happened because those producers all recognized this for what it was, his typical divisive nature but not an assertion that he was determined to cut suburbia from 35% minorities to 30%.
This is the type of mistake that is typical from the other side, but in intentional fashion when words are available to twist meaning. Yamiche didn't do it intentionally. It was a sloppy screw up.
