(646 posts)The Election Division uses Drop boxes exclusively for ballot drop off, collects the ballots, and takes them directly to the Election Division offices for counting. You will usually find them in front of libraries, rec centers, fire stations, etc. If you check your local election division website you will find a complete listing of 24/7 drop boxes, as well as Voter Services and Polling Center locations to assist you in casting your ballot.
The USPS has had its mailboxes for a long time and allows you to put any type of mail with appropriate postage into the mailboxes. It then sorts and delivers the mail to its correct destination. Yes, you can mail your ballot back to the Elections Division but the USPS has to sort all of the mail and then deliver them to their destination.
The Election Division drop boxes are exclusively for ballots and ballots go directly back to the Elections Division office to be counted.
I am very angry that Trump's criminal enterprise is attempting to shut down the USPS. His actions will hurt millions of people who rely on the USPS for their needs. Please contact your local Elections Division office and find out how the system in place at your location operates. We need EVERYONE to vote this monster and his cabal out of office.

(26,219 posts)of the USPS driving around in trucks and removing post boxes. Not ballot dropoffs, regular mail.
And they are removing sorting machines from locations across the country. No explanation for that has been offered - and it makes no sense. I get that they want to squeeze the number of pickup locations, but everything still needs to be sorted.
Fortunately, fucking with the mail is a federal offense and has a 5 year statute of limitations. Now they just need to prove it was malicious (3 months before an election) and not just some asshole with $75m in stock to USPS competitors just "doing his job" to "make them more efficient".

(24,330 posts)issue an order designating any fire station as a drop-off point for mail-in ballots. Police stations, libraries or other government agencies would work also.

(765 posts)This is looking pretty grim right now. Just wondering, if anyone is talking to Fedex and UPS, about this. They have thousands of trucks, couriers, airplanes and delivery vans, all over the country. Plus fully automated zip code based, sorting facilities, spread around the country. If they were assisting the USPS, just on a temporary basis, it could make the difference between, success and failure. I know the company I retired from, moves a great deal of mail already. The founder of our company, is a former Marine, who saw action in Viet Nam. He is a true patriot, country always comes first with him. Any ideas?

(783 posts)They are in direct competition with the USPS and they will benefit immensely if the USPS goes down. You think their CEOs really give a crap? I read somewhere that the PG holds stock in both of them as well.

That fact makes this dismantling of the Post Office a two pronged assault on democracy.
First, Trump wants to keep as many people from voting as possible, and second, his buddy wants to get rich off the desperate people who will be forced to send or receive critical items via private delivery companies.

(12,681 posts)Postal Zip Codes, affordable P.O. boxes, and the list of official unincorporated area addresses (for the census and local community services) and delivery to/mail drop locations for remote homesteads and business sites. Rural Postal offices often double as local regional seats for unincorporated settlements - groups of ranches, farms, and remote long-term research or government sites or facilities.
You aren't going to get any shipping or "mail" business to service remote areas, nor will those businesses willingly take on those critical address maintenance and "last mile" deliveries without the impetus of some serious tasty profits from taxpayers and rural residents who need those services.
While only perhaps 10% of the overall population of the US lives in or has businesses in remote rural areas, they still need general services, especially since the majority of those residents are not wealthy and regular trips to the nearest town or major city to pick up deliveries and drop off critical mail is usually out of the question in terms of either time or effort.
And pure capitalism isn't going to just "give that service" to them for the cost of a twice yearly purchase of book of "forever" stamps for Holiday and special occasion cards, if that is all they can afford to send out.
Who would be willing to spend $5.00 to send a card for birthdays or holidays, the cost on average to actually send letter using most commercial courier services or UPS/FED-EX pickup.
If you go to UPS/FED-Ex with your card or letter, they'll run the USPS process for whatever you want (adding certified, return receipt, or insurance to the letter), add a small handling fee, and just put it aside for USPS pickup anyway. Or if you aren't doing any of the above, they'll point you to the USPS drop box. They don't handle the common stuff.
