And I love it. Hopefully Michigan gets in on the Trump hate too. He is to blame. Called it a hoax for far too long.

(55,153 posts)I haven't been out in 9 days and wore my real N95 and washed my hands when I got home (had to pick up meds at Fed Ex) and no one has been in my apt in over 2 months so I hope it is just a "Summer illness". I left a message for my doctor, just in case he thinks I should get tested. Yes, I am being paranoid. My mom's 86 birthday is in 2 weeks and I don't want to get near her, especially now.

(17,506 posts)The PCR tests are time-consuming, but very sensitive. For as many cases as we have now, we need a faster, even if slightly less accurate, test. I read that a PA company is working on making such a cheap, rapid test.
I also read that while the PCR test detects covid19, it can't tell what the virus load is. That is if you have a lot of the virus or a little.

(55,153 posts)I only need to get a test if I am "curious". And just keep taking Tylenol, Ibu, Aspirin, etc for the fever and drink tons of water. If I still feel gross on Monday he may see me over the laptop, which I don't know how to do. He said there are clinics with the city or I could go to the emergency room for a test. I think CA gives free tests ot the ACA picks up most of the cost, I hope so.

Checked out an Ohio State sports forum the other day, the first time in months, after the rumors about the Big Ten postponing the season came out.
It was a mix of beliefs and opinions, as typical in this state.
One of the fans was strongly in favor of cancelling the season, and another one accused him of not being a "real" Ohio State fan. (Reminded me of Republicans who proclaim that others aren't "real Americans" like them. Lol.)
So the first guy replied that he earned his PhD in Biology at Ohio State, and he regularly attended the games while "bleeding scarlet and gray" (school colors) more than most people he knew.
Then the accuser replied, "So that explains your politics! You're one of those damn scientists!"

(3,282 posts)So he did everything he could to make people think it was going to be nothing and they didn't need to worry about it. At the same time he ignored it himself. The previous six months have been a direct consequence of that.
The most ironic part is that if he had just treated it as a serious issue and did everything he could have from the beginning we would be in a much better position today. We'd be able to play college football, go to school, and have a basically normal life. If that were the case, Trump would have won in November. Since he so badly mismanaged the biggest issue of his presidency, that's looking pretty doubtful.
Oh, and while we are on the subject of college football... I have to say that canceling the season but still having classes in person is nuts. The football players and staff are getting mandatory testing a couple of times a week, can go to the football facilities to eat and study away from the student body, etc. They are way safer as part of the football program than they are as part of the student body. If the university thinks it is safe enough to have class then football shouldn't even be a question.

(6,136 posts)But I have to disagree with your comment about football versus college as a whole.
My daughter is sitting in a dorm room at Ohio State right now in quarantine prepping for the semester. So I know a little about this.
The main reason is that classes aren't often going to be in person. Even though they are convening on campus, the vast majority of the classes will be on line anyway. Based on what I am seeing for OSU, it looks like 80-90% of them are online. Even my daughters Chem lab is only in person every third week.
Aside from that, the OSU safety protocols are some of the strictest I have seen anywhere outside of a medical setting. Dining service is essentially all to go with very limited, distanced seating. Study spaces will likewise be curtailed a great deal. And they will be testing the hell of the general student population as well.
While the football team has the potential for some extra special treatment that could keep them more isolated, they have the complication of needing to travel with hundreds of people to other Cities for games. And despite the isolation, they play a game that cannot be socially isolated.
Besides all of that, the football teams will still get special treatment. With the season canceled, the players won't get sent home. They will still get to use those same isolated eating and dining establishments without the complication of actually playing. After all, they are still hoping to play in the spring.
I feel terrible for the students because this sucks for them. It isn't the college experience they hoped for and they deserve better. Losing football is another blow to their experience. But even a substandard on-campus experience is better than a remote one so they are trying to make it work. I am realistic enough to know that it could come crashing down in a few weeks but they are giving it a try.

(14,565 posts)Initially it was the typical wingnuts blaming elite liberalism among college administrators. I assumed that would be the prevailing theme. But then quickly many other posters jumped in and ranted against the righties, with posts like, "YOU OWN THIS!" followed by all the reasoning.
I have been very impressed. Normally the righties on those forums shout down everything. I think many lurker types jumped out once they realized their football had been taken away by ignorance.
Of course, the right wingers on those forums insist coronavirus was a Chinese conspiracy to take down Trump. Then I remind them all Trump had to do was take it seriously and it was like a golden undeserved parachute.
Buckeye_Democrat
(15,526 posts)... after reading your reply, and it's similar to your observations.
Most of them seem to be focused on the remaining FBS conferences following suit, though. Acting judgmental about it (and I agree that all schools should just cancel the season for player and public safety), but I wonder how many of them were clinging to the idea of playing the games just a few days ago?
Edit: I didn't see it, but there will surely be someone that posts something like, "The SEC better cancel! I don't want to see Alabama fans proclaiming their 900th national title by default!" Lol.
Awsi Dooger
(14,565 posts)It may be a liberal state but the fan base on those forums is right wing and plenty of loud nutcases. They hate me but fortunately the administrator is a good guy so he allows my posts to stand even while many of them are calling on him to ban me.
I live in Miami and am a Canes season ticket holder. I've posted on those forums for decades but the current most popular version CanesInsight is so despicably right wing and hateful that I don't post there anymore. I departed in early March when the entire board was mocking coronavirus as a hoax. USC has the nutcase types. Canes forums have the outright animosity toward liberals and women. Then the spinoff political forum called WestEndZone is an even more vile version of the same thing.
Buckeye_Democrat
(15,526 posts)That's been my observation so far.
Thankfully, politics usually isn't discussed. I feel like puking when it's brought up, though.
That OSU forum doesn't look so bad right now, at least. Not that I'm going to linger to read their ideas about the pandemic or season cancellations. Football information is fine there, but I'll go to better sources for other topics.

(14,565 posts)The totality surprised me. I knew football forums would be that way. And golf. But I didn't expect it from sports like track and field or swimming, etc.
Those smaller sport forums actually seem to have a few hard right wing types who post constantly. I think they enjoy dominating the conversation, compared to a football forum where they would be one of many.
Horse racing forums are vocal both ways. More right than left but not as bad as 20 years ago. I think that sport with the wagering element attracts opinionated people.
genxlib
(6,136 posts)I think the more local the content, the more the Yahoos try to take over the conversation. The Sun Sentinel finally got rid of the comments all together after they became a trash heap of politics, racism and misogyny. The sports specific blogs can sometimes stay away from politics but when they deteriorate, they can go south in a hurry.
There is an interesting experiment brewing where some conferences have called it quits while others are plowing through. I am hoping it works for Miami because this season has high hopes to be the basis for a real upswing. But secretly I have to believe the other conferences are doing the right thing.

(15,526 posts)There's no social distancing in football, and they breathe heavily!
They'd need to monitor the players like crazy! Does anyone really believe that the players will all act responsibly and not go to bars, casinos, etc? And it can take up to 14 days from exposure until a person is contagious!
If anyone invents a mouthpiece-thingy that also offers N100 filtration, which ALL of them wear, then it could probably work. I haven't read reports of those kinds of efforts, though. The money-bags at the top seem more interested in just bullying their way to a disaster.
