To underscore the significance of this, Trump won white voters by 20 points in 2016, and no Democrat has gotten more than 44% of the white vote (incumbent President Bill Clinton in 1996) in a presidential election since 1976.

(5,328 posts)We need to stop the naive and unrealistic assumptions and concentrate on how the upcoming election is likely to turn out.

Your concern is noted.

(5,328 posts)... or perhaps you think believing is enough to make it so, like in Peter Pan.
Saying "everything is fine and the election is in the bag" does nothing to make things turn out the way we want, it only makes us feel good and want to sit back and relax, while Trump keeps up his dirty tricks and wins a place with the world's other dictators.

(11,371 posts)to assume that this type of polling, and reporting, is "worthless" to us. Public perception and momentum are hugely influential and significant -- in this and any other political contest. And these factors almost certainly will have great bearing on how the election "is likely to turn out." With respect -- claiming that these things are not helping -- is just not correct.

(5,328 posts)Here on DU the more important need is to increase our efforts rather than falsely believe that we've already won.
Like Swan says in The Warriors, "When we get there, that's when we made it."

(11,371 posts)both on DU and in the larger sphere. I think it is unwise to be critical of helpful things.
(and please point out where anyone is saying we have already won?)

That's what basic algebra showed from the 2016 CNN exit polls.
And those nuts are still dedicated to Trump, at least according to polls that I saw a few weeks ago.
Religion / science is the biggest division among white voters imo.

(14,858 posts)That doesn't stop me from recognizing patterns among different groups, of course.
I'd mostly like to know why white evangelical Christians are fooled by people like Trump, but non-white evangelical Christians are not. (Not to the same extent, anyway. There's still some people like Ben Carson out there.)
I suspect it's mostly because the non-white religious folks have a LOT more to worry about than just abortion or homosexuality.
