Kamala Harris As VP Completely Blows Up Trump Campaign's Strategy, If It Ever Had One

If there's one takeaway from the Trump campaign's rapid-fire response to Joe Biden choosing Sen. Kamala Harris of California as his running mate, it's that Trump and his supposed operatives have no idea what they're doing.

At the White House task force briefing following the announcement, Trump deployed the word "nasty" several times to describe Harris, but it was really nothing more than his predictably misogynistic muscle memory taking over.

But the lack of a cohesive line of attack wasn't just a failure of execution. The campaign hadn't actually pre-scripted a response, according to The Washington Post's Ashley Parker. When Parker reached out to Trump campaign officials following Biden's announcement, they really didn't have a set direction or opposition research lined up to deploy, she told MSNBC on Wednesday. When she asked what angles they planned to take, "[n]o one really knew," Parker recalled. Stunning.

That lack of preparation also trickled down to GOP lawmakers on the Hill. Sen. Roy Blunt of Missouri, a member of the GOP leadership team, didn't even try to take a shot at Harris when asked about the pick on Wednesday.

"I don’t vote with her very often, we don’t agree on our votes, but I served with her, I like her," he told CNN's Manu Raju, noting that they serve on the Senate Intelligence Committee together. “She has normally stayed very well within the standards of that committee, which in the Senate is the least political of all committees. And she’s smart and she’s tough.”

That sounds like someone who didn't get the memo because there wasn't one.

2. And this week the Democrats need to do a good job reintroducing her to America.

Democrats need to set the tone and not let Trump define or identify her.

4. That's strange-- I would have thought Harris was the odds-on favorite since Biden clinched

Why they would think that Biden, who served as a black man's VP, would balk at a black woman as VP, I don't know. But sometime the Trumper hatred overwhelms all political savvy.

Karen Bass, so they set their sights on her.

12. I think Biden intentionally floated Bass as a honeypot for the Trump campaign

She was such a tempting target they couldn't help but focus all their energies on her in anticipation.

I think they also got comfortable in eliminating her (Harris) from potential picks because she was one of the only candidates to go after Biden in the debates. For petty men like Trump and Putin, it is unfathomable to pick someone who has challenged you, much less publicly. They can’t understand that real men like Biden know that being challenged, being called out, can only make you a better leader and man.

I am so impressed with Biden. It says so much about who he is that he still selected Harris who I’ve always felt was one of the best (if not THE best) for the job.

11. Yep. This is exactly why it caught them by surprise.

It's very telling that one of the first things Trump did after the announcement was whine about how mean Sen. Harris was to Biden during that debate.
